the plot of the story is when mafatu gets bullied by his friend, he goes to the ocean in a canoe to conquer his fear. he gets wounded . mafatu has to save his dog . gets attacked by the eaters- of -men.gets back on the boat to return home to prove how brave he is. he kills animals on the way to an island.

tone and mood
the tone in the beginning of the book is that he has this fear that makes him do a ladies work. he wishes someone would be proud of him so he goes and conquers his fear. he then gets hurt in the middle of the ocean , and he has to survive on his own with his dog uri. he conquers his fear,saves his dog, gets attacked by a wild pig and an octopus. he returns home, and his dad praises him for conquering his fear.
