THE LIFE CYCLE OF A LION

THE END!

By Harvey Sillitoe

Male lion

Female lion

As males mature, they seek out other prides to take over. They drive out or kill the older males and take control of the pride, leading the group until they are killed or driven away themselves.

Females go through a hazing process with the older females. If they endure the harassment, they are accepted into the pride for their entire lives.

The life cycle of a lion

Adolescent lion ( a teenager! )

The next step is a fully grown lion

At around a year old, the male lion is nearly fully grown and his mane is developing. He is learning to hunt and fight, but is still protected by his family or pride.

Male and female lions become sexually mature at the age of two. Males are driven off to form small partnerships; females stay with the pride.

Introduction

The lion starts life as a cub.

I have chosen a lion because they are a rare creature and I wanted to learn some more about them.

Lion cubs are born blind, weigh about 500g (half a bag of sugar) and measure about 30cm long. They are born away from the pride, but are introduced after a few weeks.

Interesting facts

They live up to 10 - 14 years.

Lions are carnivores, they eat meat: Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and waterbuck make up the bulk of their diet.

Adaptation and food chain

Lions live in groups called a pride. There are about 25-35 lions in a pride.

Most of them are female & cubs and it has 2-3 male lions.

Lions are known as the "king of the jungle" but ....... they don't live in the jungle, they live on the savanna in Africa.

One of the adaptations of a lion are his claws because the help kill his prey.

The life cycle starts here.

The last one is his fur because it gets extremely cold at night so his fur keeps him warm.

Another one is that they hunt in packs making it easier to catch large prey.
