Musical Instruments

  • Ekwe (slit drum)is a drum that is carved out of a hollow tree. The different drum sounds also symbolize different festivals, arrivals and events.

Highlife

  • A fusion of west African music and music from Western cultures.
  • Ogene (gong) is the most important ritualistic instrument among the Igbo people. It accompanies many of the traditional songs and dances in Nigeria.

  • Igba (cylinder drum) -This instrument accompanies most of the musical aspects of Igbo life.
  • Oja (flute)- This instrument is very similar to the modern flute. However, this flute is made of wood.
  • Udu (pottery drum)-This instrument is an example of instruments based on the Nok culture. It is also used as a safe or for water storage.
