Wind and Climate
- Windward: an object that is facing the wind or on the side facing the wind
- Leeward is the opposite of windward. Leeward is defined as on or toward the side sheltered from the wind or toward which the wind is blowing; downwind
- Rain shadow: a region having little rainfall because it is sheltered from prevailing rain-bearing winds by a range of hills
Ocean Winds and Temperatures
- Doldrums: A narrow windless band that is diverted north and south at the equator
- Warm and cold streams of water move to the ocean, known as currents
- Ocean currents affect the coastal land they flow near
- El Nino: a periodic change in the patterns of ocean currents and water temperatures in the mid-Pacific region
- La Nina: a cooling of the water in the equatorial Pacific that occurs at irregular intervals and is associated with widespread changes in weather patterns complementary to those of El Niño, but less extensive and damaging in their effects.
Wind
- Prevailing Wind: Global winds in a constant pattern.
- Because earth rotates to the east, the global winds are displaced clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. This is called the Coriolis effect, and causes prevailing winds to blow diagonally rather than along north-south and east-west lines.
