  • Tikal National Park is the largest evacuated site. The acient city was abandonded by the Mayans over 1000 years ago. Now it is located in Guatemala surrounded by 222 square miles of jungle. Tikal means city of voices. The National Park was named Tikal because of the way that the great plaza, one of the many breath taking places in Tikal, was built. The Great Plaza was built so everyone could hear the words of someone standing on top of the 2 main temples.

The Mayans began to build Tikal in 600 B.C. and includes more than 3,000 structures; some of which being temples, like the great plaza, palaces, like the bat palace, ball courts, cerimonial stages and more.

The Great Plaza

The Great Plaza is the most discovered area and was also the most used area before evacuation. The Great Plaza is home to both Temple I, Temple II and many smaller temples. In the Great Plaza announcments were delivered to the people by being announced at the top of temple I or II. But the Great Plaza is only one of the 3,000 sites in Tikal National Park.
