On Women's Right to Vote

by Susan B. Anthony

Paragraph IV

In this paragraph, Susan B Anthony expresses her deep disappointment of the law. She voices her opinion that not giving women the right to vote will cause a rebellion into every home.

Analysis

Susan B. Anthony also uses the persuasive technique ethos in this paragraph. She chose the Constitution because it is the most absolute law of the United States. She knew that no one could deny the Constitution as law.

This is the paragraph where Susan B Anthony provides evidence to support her claim. She chooses to use the preamble of the United States Constitution to provide a credible source for her claim . She chose the preamble as her evidence because it contains everything she is trying to prove. Though she quoted the entire preamble the main part she was using as her evidence was "We the people" The preamble gives "the people" certain rights and she is arguing that women are people. Therefore, women have all the citizen's rights men have, such as voting.

Paragraph III

In this paragraph, Susan B Anthony is explaining that being incriminated for voting is a violation of the United States Constitution.

Analysis

"...to pass a bill of attainder, or, an ex post facto law, and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land." This quote is where Susan B. Anthony uses logos. She is giving facts that keeping women from voting is unconstitutional.

"Being persons, then, women are citizen; and no state has a right to make any law, or to enforce any old law, that shall abridge their privileges or immunities " This is the counter claim of this speech. The only question in the minds of the audience at this point is that were women in mind when the founders of the Constitution used the word persons. Even if that was not the intention women are in fact people and no one can deny that. Therefore women have a Constitutional right to voting on the leader of the nation.

Analysis

"...most hateful aristocracy ever established on the face of the globe" This quote is definitely an example of pathos. She is using loaded language to get to the emotions of her audience. She is trying to make the audience angry. She wants the audience to become angry because when people are angry they are more likely to make a change.

Background Information

Paragraph II

Analysis

Paragraph V

This paragraph is a quote of the preamble of the United States Constitution.

Analysis

At the time this speech was given (1872), it was against the law for women to vote. Susan B. Anthony was not allowed a trial by jury for her indictment. Knowing this, she traveled the country giving her speech to anyone who would listen. Susan B Anthony's purpose for this speech was to change that law. She was successful in her efforts because today women are allowed to vote. Her primary audience for her speech was for the people who could make a change, men. She wanted to convince the men of this nation that the right to vote should be granted to everyone. Her secondary audience for her speech was the women of this nation. She wanted the women to get fired up enough to want to help her make this change.

Paragraph I

Analysis

"...simply exercised my citizen's rights"

Susan B. Anthony chose to used the loaded phrase citizen's rights to appeal to the sense of citizenship enstowed in all americans. Most American citizens get very heated when they feel like their rights are being taken away.

"It shall be my work this evening to prove to you that in thus voting, I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my citizen's rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution, beyond the power of any state to deny" This is the claim of this speech. This statement is the basis of the entire speech. She is making a promise to her audience to prove that she did no wrong when voting.

Summary

The first paragraph is Susan B. Anthony introducing her speech about women's right to vote. She explains that she been charged for the crime of voting. She clearly states why she in fact did not commit any crime, because voting was her Constitutional right.

"Are women persons?" Susan B Anthony uses this rhetorical question to drive home her conclusion. She has already established that since women are persons, they possess all Constitutional rights. This includes the right to liberty, which means being allowed to vote.

This is the closing paragraph in the speech. In this paragraph she is basically just repeating her opening paragraph. She is telling the audience how the Constitution gives women the right to vote and taking away that right would be a violation of the supreme law of the land.
