In 2013 work began on Ireland's largest Islamic mosque. The site was located at the Clongriffin centre on the north-side of Dublin. This will be the largest Isamic complex in the State. The project will cost a total of 40 million euro. The mosque complex will be able to cater for more than 3,000 people and will feature two minarets, a prayer hall, a cultural centre, offices, bookshop, a library, a mortuary, a creche, a 600-seat events centre, school, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, and apartment blocks.

Islam is one of the largest religions in the world, with over 1 billion followers. It is a monotheistic faith based on revelations received by the Prophet Muhammad. The Arabic word Islam means “submission,” reflecting the faith's central tenet of submitting to the will of God. Followers of Islam are called Muslims.
The documented history of the Islamic presence in Ireland goes back to the 1950’s. This was represented in the Muslim students who came to Ireland to study. Before this time very little or nothing was known about Islam and Muslims in Ireland. The first Islamic Society in Ireland was established in 1959. It was formed by Muslim students and was called the Dublin Islamic Society, this is known as IFI(Islamic Foundation Ireland). At this time there was no Mosque in Dublin.
