The Florida Everglades; Destruction of natural beauty and its after effects

Pgs: 172-190

Nature's Revenge

The Big Blow-Nature's Challenges

Dying of birds

  • Despite the fact, many farmers wanted to grow crops and inhabit their animals, around the Everglades region, they indeed wanted for the Everglades to keep on doing its part as a natural habitat with water to keep soil intact as well as for the animals to be nurtured. Still, not even mother nature was pleased.
  • In the 1920's nature stroke back. Florida suffered from huge amounts of rainfall, and overflow from the everglades . Farmers would complain because, the overflow of water coming from the Everglades destroyed their crops and was difficult for them to keep growing and gathering their crops.
  • The Army Corps dealt with the farmers complains about the overflow.
  • Farmers in the upper Glades demanded lower lake levels, except during droughts, yet fisherman, steamboats operators, and the Army Corps demanded higher lake levels, and farmers in the lower Glades complained that when water release from the Glades it would land on the farmers fields.
  • The Army Corps versus farmers were a huge controversy because to the farmers the destroying of crops, whereas for fisherman, and boat operators would use it for nurturing purposes.
  • Another topic that followed was the drainage of the dam (Miami Canal), yet this only makes it worse because land owners around the area would be affected by the floods.
  • In the summer of 1926, when the heavy rains raised the water levels of Lake Okeechobee, the final solution was made. Howard Sharp demanded the releases of water, through the diagonal canals. With this, Elliot believed that this releases of water would release to protect in the upper Glades. in truth, it would only flood the coastal communities downstream, and water leftover would be stored in the lake for irrigation pourposes.
  • Either way, nature will never please others, because in fact nature only pleases for its it own concern. The concern of preserved land and beauty.
  • In Miami, businesses was booming, especially that of infrastructure. Much money was put into business; business owners invested millions on railroad construction, as well as building ; casinos, hotels, and homes.
  • In September 17th, 1926, a hurricane was unexpected, attacking the area, and affecting much the area. Mostly, where the landowners were and businesses were established was affected horrendously by this monstrous storm. The Lake Okeechobee was over flooded causing nearly 400 people, leaving over 40,000 homeless, and loss of businesses.
  • To Howard Sharp, and the remainders in the upper Glades, the hurricane was no minor accident, yet a negligent homicide.

Overpopulation takes a toll for destruction

  • The drying of the Glades in the 1920, caused by the various canals draining water from the Everglades, is causing difficulty for birds to live, and nurture themselves.
  • What mostly impacted them was not being able to feed themselves because the ground fields were turning salty. The salt caused the soil to harm the plants and various insects.
  • John Kunkel Small quotes "drainage and burning have become such a fad, or even a mania, that the land will soon be unable to support vegetable life, which in turn supports animal life!" (Grunwald, pg 174).

Disastrous Beauty

  • In 1910s, Miami's population was nearly about 30,000, were in southeast Florida's population quadruplicated to about 70,000
  • The many people that invaded south Florida were classified as "swamp rats" because they would build homes, farms, roads, and even resorts throughout the Everglades, causing animals; birds to live in hazard.
  • Much so that a new era of "roadkill" cam about. Various smashed animals; insects, reptiles, birds were killed on impact my cars, covering the highway surrounding the everglades.

To my understandings, "I consider that nature plays a great part in all situations"

The Florida Everglades is much as our most closes backyard. The fact that we gain resources, and yet pertain others from it, influences the greatness of the nature. We need to become environmentalist in order to seek a much better understanding to how we should relate with nature. Much of the facts coming from the reader, talks about the issue that even though we insist of using nature to our command, it always seems to strike back. In all, nature has its own way of revealing to us that WE ARE ONE with nature. We are within nature, because nature surrounds us. it influences us, gives us life, but most of all grants us with its wondrous beauty. The beauty of the Florida Everglades.

  • With the destroying of the pond apple trees, caused by the farmers. Naturalist Charles Torrey Simpson was appalled by what he saw when farmers took over the region were the trees were. Yet, when dealing with the sudden drought and drainage canals, underground fire was starting to spread throughout the region.
  • Simposon quotes "all the glamor and mystery which once surrounded the great lake [...] [is] disapearring fast before the advantage of the white man's civilization" (Grunwald, pg 169).
