* compliance refers to changing one's behavior due to the request or direction of another person

* Informative Social Influence: The group may provide valuable information, but stubborn people will never listen to others.

* Normative Social Influence: Influence resulting from a person’s desire to gain approval or avoid rejection. A person may respect normative behavior because there may be a severe price to pay if not respected.

Social Pressures Can Create Dissonance and Lead to Conformity

Seven factors that increase conformity (Asch):

* Subject feels insecure

* The group has at least 3 people.

* The group is unanimous.

* Subject admires the group.

* Subject has made no prior commitment to any response

* Others observe the subject’s behavior.

* The culture encourages respect for social standards.
