System Overview

System Overview

The heart is a part of the circulatory system.

The main function of the circulatory system is to pump blood from place to place. The heart is made up of cardiac muscle which allows the heart to expand and contract involuntary, which is important.

The brain dissection demonstrates the nervous system.

The nervous system is used for many different things such as telling the body when to move, speak, breathe, and other things. The signal passes through the axon terminal into the dendrites (the synapse) and starts the movement to the correct nerve.

The eye is the organ of sight it is part of the sensory system.

Part of the eye is the retina, which is made up of multiple nerves that converts the image into electrical impulses. The cornea is used as a refracting surface, that gives us a clear image. The eye is made up of fibrous connective tissue which is good because it is dense and transparent.

The skin is part of the integumentary system, and the first step is to skin the cat.

Muscles are a group in their own and they focus on the cats movement.

The heart is part of the circulatory system, this is seen in the cats when viewing the blood vessels.

The respiratory system is in control of breathing, in the cats we see the lungs.

The reproductive system makes babies, we see this in the cats lower body represented by a penis or vagina.

ZT

The Chicken wing lab demonstrates the function of three different parts the skin, muscles and the bone.

The skin is used for protection, it protects the chicken against harmful temperatures, chemicals, mechanical, and bacterial things that could possibly harm it. Stratified squamous make up the skin and that helps it be productive.

The muscles of the chicken are used for movement. Being able to move is a way for the chicken to protect itself. Without being able to move the chicken would literally be a sitting duck HAAAAAAAAA. The muscles are made up of

The bones of the chicken are used for structure, they give the chicken posture and allow it to walk on two legs.

Goals

Our goal for this dissection is to find out how the heart works. To look at the different valves and pumps work and also where they lead too.

The goal for the cat dissection is to be able to identify every part of the digestive system as well as the other parts we learned about earlier in the semester.

Goals for this dissection are to see how the chicken wing moves. Using our knowledge on the subject we were able to identify the three major parts, the bone, muscles and the skin.

The goals of the brain lab is to see how the different nerves work and also to see what part of the brain does what. For example which part of the brain moves our left or right side.

The goal for the eye dissection is to see how the different parts of the eye are used to make the eye function at its full potential. We want to be able to see the way the cornea, iris, retina and many other parts work.

Procedure

Each group was given half a sheep brain to look inside label and try to ind relation and differences between a human brain. We would label several different thing such as the cerebellum of the brain. SR

After getting our chicken wing we tied the wing down and stared to label the different muscles and tissues as we found them using the scalpel to pull back the skin and getting a better look at the muscles.

SR

Each group was given a sheep eye to then cut in half. We would then look inside the sheep eye to see and understand the different parts doing things such as removing the retina and labeling it.

SR

First we skin the cat to get own to the muscles. This helps us see the thickness of the dermis. Then we identified the muscles and located the major arteries and veins. Next we identified the heart lungs an other major organs. This helped us to see how all of the functions came together to form one working unit.

ZT

We were given the heart and instructed to cut it in half. This gave us the ability to see the size of the left and right ventricles as well as the atrium's and aorta. We also put our fingers through the pathways the blood took. This helped to truly understand the hearts main function.

Sean's Reflection

I wasn't here for this dissection, but I was told it was very enlightening and they learned a lot about all the different part. Also how its different because there's no room for the hind brain and brain stem on the horizontal spine of a sheep

I also missed the cow eye dissection but was interested in the cows ability to see at night because of the tapetum. This is the same thing in alligators and cats that make there eyes shine when hit by a flashlight

I learned a lot about chicken wings. How the bicep is responsible for contraction and the triceps for extension. i got to see the muscle fibers, the tendons that run through, and noted how much harder it was to pull tendon off bone than anything else.

The sheep heart helped me understand the path of blood better because i could see the different thicknesses in myocardium, in the right ventricle for example, for pumping oxygenated blood to the whole body.

The cat dissection was my favorite, i got to skin the cat and see the adipose tissue below for fat storage protection and warmth. I noted that being 4-legged caused the cat to have a lot of extra skin on the front of its hind legs for extension, structure matches function

Katie's Reflection

The cat dissection was the one that explained the most to me. Even though I sat out of the dissection taking pictures and doing the questions made me learn a lot.

The heart dissection was extremely helpful and I believe I learned a lot from doing this. The heart was a good dissection and I would keep doing this one.

During the brain dissection I learned what the different parts of the brain looked like. This dissection was helpful because on the quiz we had to label some parts and seeing them for real helped.

The eye dissection was a good representation of what the eye looked like and how all of the parts worked together. Even though I sat out from this dissection the packet that I filled out helped me a lot with the material.

One thing I learned about this dissection was that the muscles, bones and skin all work together to help the chicken function. All in all I enjoyed this dissection because I learned a lot about how the skin, bones and muscles work.

Zoe's Reflection

To be honest the cats were kind of gross, an every day i was not looking forward to it. But in the end it was very educational an cool to see all of the parts together.

ZT

I liked this dissection because I was able to see the size differences in the ventricles and atrium's. Having that as a visual made everything else click when i see it on paper.

ZT

This was gross because now i can not eat chicken wings like i use too. Although it was cool to see how you could pull on it and the whole unit would work.

ZT

The eye dissection was something i never thought i would witness. I was totally grossed out but it was so cool to see all the parts.

ZT

Like the other dissections this one was really cool. Seeing the split brain and all the little lumps was really interesting. It was cool to see it, and it looked a lot like the models.

ZT

Sam's Reflection

I really enjoyed the cat yes it was very disgusting for me personal it put everything together i am a hands on learner and it helped me fully understand what was happening.

The eye gave a very good understanding of what really happens in the eye and how does the eye function d what is needed for the eye to function.

SR

The chicken wing lab was a good warm up to what the rest of the class would be like. Learning the tools in this lab would latter help us also help us build with those tools in other lab. Eventually helping us with the cat.

SR

The heart dissection was very helpful the understanding of the heart. It helped me fully see things such as the left side of the heart is stronger than the right because it pumps blood to the whole body. SR

The brain was my least favorite of everything we did because yes I did learn what a brain look like it was not much hands on a lot of labeling and putting two things together.
