  • The word element is at the end of the word
  • A suffix is contained in most medical words
  • A suffix usually shows that it's an indication of condition, symptoms, pathology, therapeutic or diagnostic procedure
  • Rule 1: A word root combines a suffix that begins with a vowel.
  • Rule 2: A combining form combines a suffix that begins with a consonant.
  • Rule 3: A combining form combines a root to another root to form a compound word.
  • Rule 3: The third rule is true even if the next root begins with a vowel, as in oste/o/arthr/itis.

How to use a Prefix:

Defining medical terms:

  • A prefix is placed at the beginning of a word
  • Example: Bi/articulate-double joint
  • There are three steps to defining medical terms:
  • First define the sufffix.
  • Then, define the first part of the word which can be a word root, combining form, or prefix.
  • Lastly define the middle portion of the word which can be a word root or combining form.
  • A word root links a suffix that starts with a vowel
  • Example: cyt/o/logy
  • A combining form links a suffix that begins with a consonant
  • Example: dermat/o/itis
