San Francisco Benefits for the Reservoir

The Hetch Hetchy Debate

Pros from A.C.E.

  • the dam would later pay for itself, for it generates electricity that is sold to the city of San Francisco (funds).
  • The Hetch Hetchy Power System produces two billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year.
  • On November 4, California voters passed a 7.5 billion dollar water bond, which could make an expansion to the Los Vaqueros reservoir to make restorations to the hetch hetchy valley.
  • Some environmentalist believe that they shouldn't make the change because it will affect the adjusting ecosystem.

Pros:

  • Good quality water for the people
  • The people will have water under any climate conditions ,such as a drought
  • Water will be easy to collect for the city with a minimal cost
  • Electrical power could be generated at the reservoir and sold to generate funds to support the construction
  • The city will have to pay far less for the water rights
  • It would be $20,000,000 less expensive to use this site then any other site

Why the Decision is Correct

  • Its the highest possible use that could be made of Hetch Hechy it would be to supply pure water to a great center of the population.
  • Every part of the land and its resources will be put to use which will serve the most people.
  • Development of electrical power at the dam site could be used by homes and businesses.

Conclusions

  • A reservoir and a water system that is located in California in the United States. The glacial Hetch Hetchy Valley lies in the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park and is drained by the Tuolumne River. For thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans in the 1850s, the valley was inhabited by Native Americans who practiced subsistence hunting-gathering. During the late 19th century, the valley was renowned for its natural beauty – often compared to that of Yosemite Valley – but also targeted for the development of water supply for irrigation and municipal interests. In 1934 began to deliver water 167 miles (269 km) west to San Francisco and its client municipalities in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
  • These works have remained contested to the present day on both legal and environmental platforms. In the 21st century, there has been renewed interest in removing the dam and restoring the valley to its natural state.
  • A U.S. federal agency under the Department of Defense and a major Army command made up of some 37,000 civilian and military personnel, making it one of the world's largest public engineering, design, and construction management agencies. Although generally associated with dams, canals and flood protection in the United States, USACE is involved in a wide range of public works throughout the world.
  • The Engineer Regiment includes the U.S. Army Engineer School which publishes its mission as, Generate the military engineer capabilities the Army needs, training and certifying Soldiers with the right knowledge, skills, and critical thinking; growing and educating professional leaders; organizing and equipping units; establishing a doctrinal framework for employing capabilities; and remaining an adaptive institution in order to provide Commanders with the freedom of action they need to successfully execute Unified Land Operations.
  • Support the movement of criticals commedities and providing reacration opportuntites at the campgrounds or the lakes and marinas.
  • Devising hurricane and storm damage reduction infrastructure, we are reducing risks from disasters.
  • Protecting and restoring the Nation’s environment including critical efforts in the Everglades, the Louisiana coast, and along many of our Nation’s major waterways.
  • Cleaning sites contaminated with hazardous, toxic or radioactive waste and material in an effort to sustain the environment.
  • The Hetch Hetchy Valley reservoir was a good addition to the city of San Francisco because it would give them water and pay for itself due the fact that it generates electricity.
  • If they were to change it back to its original state, the environment that changed with the creation would have to adapt again to its old conditions.
  • the use of supply and demand for water was the main reason why the dam was constructed.
