I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a book written from an interesting perspective. This book is not just about a slave’s life and the owner’s life. The book is about two oppressed young girls, oppressed in two different ways, going against the norms society has put into place for them and how their actions affect each other. Both Sarah Grimke and Hetty “Handful” Grimke are in the same age group and are fighting for their right to have a voice. If you take away the aspect of slavery, women in today’s world can relate to what these young females are going through. It speaks to the fact women and black people alike have been oppressed by a system that is ran and made to benefit rich, white men. The title of the book resonates with the overall theme of the book. These two girls are in the process of finding their womanhood, finding their voice, finding their wings. If you are looking for a novel that is a fictional account of American History, this is the book for you!
Both Hetty and Sarah were oppressed by their time period. Hetty was a young black slave, she was not allowed to do anything, but obey the rules of her masters. She was never quiet about how she felt and was looked at as a rebel. Same for Sarah, she fought hard to be equal to the men in her family. She educated herself and fought against the social norms of her time.
