SKYFALL OPENING SCENE ANALYSIS
The light in this mid-shot scene is shining in from the window onto the man in the chair; it is focusing our attention on the man but also creating a silhouette of the main character to make him look bold and stand out. The light may have been placed there as the man who was shot was a good guy and the audience could easily recognise this.
This high angle shot enables the audience to see what the main character is doing and what he is holding from a slight back view. The dark lighting here delivers spooky, mysterious and curious feelings.
This is an extreme long shot; it is used so the audience are informed that the characters are moving from one location to another. It allows the audience to take in the layout of the scene as well as to emphasis the distance the characters have to travel in order to reach their destination.
The first scene is a long shot of the main character standing still, then beginning to walk forward. The long shot provides an extended view around the character and you can see he is standing in a hallway. It is used to make the audience aware of his presence as there isn’t much around him to look at. This adds a sense of danger, forbidden romance or maintaining a secret identity.
This is a close up shot of the main characters face. The silhouette of his gun is blurred. The gun silhouette is easily seen as it is a well-used prop in action films. It is blurred as the main focus is on his eye; and the light is only on his eye to create an intense atmosphere and make the audience think about what he can see.
We can see from this close up shot the character is witnessing another event. It also shows the seriousness on his face which implies the situation is important and if he doesn’t do his job something might happen. The mise en scene incorporates props into the scene to make the film look realistic. The earpiece is a prop used to show that he might be a secret agent or a spy. You can see here when the film was being editted, fast cuts where put in to make everything look like its happening fast and fits in with the action theme.
This shot is a slight high angle shot, the main character is on a higher level which suggests he is more powerful than the character sat down in the chair.
