Food, Hunting and Gathering Techniques
Location, Location, Location
- Women Farmed corn, squash and beans using baskets to carry the food they harvested
- Men Hunted deer, turkeys and small game with bows and arrows. Dogs were used as pack animals
- Men also went fishing using spears and nets.
- The Powhatan Tribe is located where we now call Eastern Virginia
- The floodplains were a great source of food and travel for the Natives.
Clothing and Shelter
- Lived in Wigwams or Longhouses
- Some villages surrounded by log walls
- Men and women both wore earrings, moccasins and beaded headband with feathers

Survival of the Powhatan Tribe
- Survived through peace treaties
- Lived through discrimination and ownership rights taken away
- Pocahontas acted as a liaison between natives and colonists.
Spiritual beliefs/ Music and Ceremonies
- Mainly Believed in 2 gods
- Ahone: creator god
- Okeus: War/ evil
- Believed in hierarchy of gods and spirits
- Healing was believed to be very spiritual
- Had two main classes
- Ceremonies were very Spiritual
- Main ceremony were midsummer celebrations.
- Had songs for every occasion.
Contact with Europeans
- Powhatan tribe interacted with Jamestown colony.
- Pocahontas was famously recognized for saving John Smith's life
- Powhatan tribe believed land to be sacred- the Jamestown settlement was firstly a colony and secondly a source of mining.
- English were told to kill 'Indians'- yet original meetings were quite peaceful.
