Was Created by Eli Whitney in 1793,could remove the seeds from the cotton quickly.One slave could clean one pound a day picking out the seeds by hand,now ten pound a day.

The Missouri Compromise which settled the conflict that had arisen from Missouri application for statehood.The three conditions of the compromise was:Missouri would enter the union as a slave state,Maine wound join the union as a free state to keep the number of free to slave states the same, and that the states of higher of the 36,30 latitude line would be free states and lower than the line is slave.

The underground railroad was a series of slave house that helped slave escaped to freedom in the North.One of the most famous underground railroad conductors is Harriet Tubman, a former slave she helped many slave escape and travel to safety in the North. She return to the South 19 times and successfully leading her family and more than 300 other slaves to freedom.

Most violent slave revolt in the United States occurred in 1831 and it known as Nat Turner's rebellion.Turner and his men attacked families of slaveholders,they ended up killing 60 white people in their community.

The compromise of 1850, California was able to enter the Union as a free state. The rest of the Mexican cession was divided into two territories-Utah and New Mexico-where the question of whether to allow slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty.

The fugitive Slave Act made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas.A person who helped a runaway slave would get six months in prison and a fine of $1000. Many of the people in the North were against the Act.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" writen by Harriet Beecher Stowe,is a fiction and anti-slavery novel.It was a best seller in the North,the story is based on the stories that the fugitive slaves,that Stowe meet,told about what is like to be a slave.Southern writers said it was "foul imagination which could invent such scenes." Within a decade, more than 2 million copies of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" were sold.

The Kansas-Nabraska Act,a plan that would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories-Kansas and Nebraska- and allow the people in each territory to decide on the question of slavery.This Act would eliminate the Missouri Compromise restriction on slavery north of the 36,30 line.

John Brown,an American ablolitionist spoke out about his dislike of pro-slavery people,started acting out.Brown,his five sons and his men killed five pro-slavery men in Kansas in what became as the Pottawatomie Massacre.

Dred Scott was the slave of Dr. John Emerson,he went with the docter when he was serving his duty in Illinois and Wisconsin.When the docter died,Scott became a slave of Emerson's Widow. In 1846 Scott sued for his freedom because he lived in free territory and was free.The lower court ruled in his favor, but was overturned by the Supreme Court. Scott's case reached the Supreme court 11 years later,in 1857. The justices-a majority of whom were from the South-had three issues between them. The court ruled that Scott was not a citizen, therefore can't sue in federel court.Secound, the court ruled that his time on free soil did not make him free in Missouri. And lastly,that the Fifth Amendment was not relevent because slaves were considered property.
