GOD- spread Christianity (sometimes by force)
GLORY- recognition and fame for discoveries
GOLD- wealth from discovery of gold, spices, and other profitable resources
Christopher Columbus, Hernan Cortes, Vasco Da Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan, Francisco Pizarro and John Cabot are 7 of the most well known explorers whom we will learn about. You will be broken up into 7 groups and where you will research, orally present to class. I have chosen the groups for you.
Ranch? Ketchup? BBQ Sauce? Mustard? Salt? Pepper? Franks Hot Sauce?
Can you imagine never eating french fries without ketchup or pepper on your steak?

-Europe was curious about Asia because of Marco Polo's travels
-desire for trade and discovory, especially spices of East Asia
- spices needed to preserve and flavor food (Pepper, cloves, nutmeg, sugar, etc.)
- expensive after Arab middlemen shipped them to Europe
-Explorers (Christopher Columbus went in search of West Indies (India) to get spices, ended up in Americas

-believed it was religious duty to convert Indigenous people to Christianity
-Why would Europeans, especially Catholics, want to convert people from the America's to Christianity?
- In addition to spices, Europeans went in search of gold and other precious metals
- Portugal took lead in European exploration, discovered Gold in West Africa

-European settlers found that the Caribbean islands worked great for growing sugarcane (very profitable crop)
