Important people who made significant changes

1768-1774

Guy Carlton

John Graves Simcoe

1793

Guy Carlton was the governer of Quebec. Instead of following the King's rules to covert all the French people into English speaking Protestants, he wanted to work with the French. He let them keep their civil law and then proposed to govern Quebec with a mix of French and English laws. He also gave rights to the French that they didn't have before. If it wasn't for Guy Carlton maybe Quebec would be an English speaking province, which would have a huge impact on Canada.

John Graves Simcoe was the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada. He was very significant to the Foundation Of Canada because he moved the capital of Upper Canada to Toronto in fear of Americans. Most importantly he outlawed slavery which meant no more Canadians could sell, buy or kidnap black people, but were allowed to keep their slaves. If it weren't for him and his ideas and opinions, maybe slavery would be going on today, and the world would live in discrimination. He was also very significant in the part of The Constitutional Act of 1791 and if it weren't for him, maybe Ontario would be Quebec, and maybe a French speaking province. We know celebrate Simcoe Day in Canada

Canada!!

After countless wars, treaties, and rebellions, Canada is an amazing country today. We have a French speaking province of Quebec because of Guy Carelton. We are separate countries between USA and Canada because of the American Revolution and George Washington. All these events, treaties, has led to this. They have been the roots to the Foundation of Canada. In my opinion, it seems, like Canada is at it's highest level on the highest branch of the tree, compared to what we were centuries ago. Though, I still think this tree will continue to grow, instead of withering. I thank the people, and events, which makes me here today.

George Washington

General James Wolfe 1759

George Washington was very significant to not only USA, but Canada as well. As a young soldier he fought with General James Wolfe at the time fighting for Britain. Later on, he was the leader in the American Revolution, in disgust of how the British Crown treated the Thirteen Colonies after all they had been through. He is historically significant because he who led the American Revolution, was a leader who had the courage, determination, and honesty, to believe in his troops. No one can replace the man who led the untrained Patriots to battle with courage. If it weren't for General George Washington, many (including I) think the Americans would've easily lost the war. And if they did lose, Canada and America would both still be part of the British Crown, and

possibly be the same country. That

would change our economy, industry,

government, and our lives today.

In the other world wars, maybe the

Canadians voice would be heard by

an American opinion. We would fight

alongside each other instead of

against each other. Everything would

change.

General James Wolfe was a very significant man to history. He led the British to victory on the Plains of Abraham which led to many losses by the French and eventually the Treaty of Paris. He was very strategical and planned the attack on flat land where the French weren't good and ambushed them. If it weren't for James Wolfe, maybe the French would've won and lead to the Treaty of Paris, but in Britsh Defeat. Almost all of North America would be French, which would change us dramatically today/

Loyalists Arrive

The Constitutional act!

The Aboriginals!

of 1791!

During and After the American Revolution!

The Aboriginals were a group that was sometimes left out in history books. However, we know today, that if it weren't for them, the Europeans wouldn't be able to survive in such harsh weather. The Aboriginals were very significant. Some were allies with the French, and some were allies with the British. They contributed hugely to various types of wars with both sides, siding with those who would vow to promise their land and protect their people. They were also used as a fear factor. In the American Revolution, they were used to make the enemies surrender, thinking that they were outnumbered. There were many tribes, but the Iroquois Confederacy, had 6 nations (Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, Tuscarora) still live on (in large groups) to tell the story today. They were also the main groups that got involved with the war to defend their territory, and stand their ground. Aboriginals

were the first people of Canada and are still

significant today.

During the American Revolution, one of the greatest mass migrations in Canadian history occurred. Loyalists of the Britain Crown, migrated to Canada, in fear of what would happen of their consequences. The Patriots (American Rebels) raided the Loyalists, for spreading the beliefs and loyalty to Britain. Most of them fled to Nova Scotia where a strong British base at Halifax layed, and away from the French. Around 50 000 loyalists fled to Canada, as the population of Canada exploded under the American Revolution. This is historically significant because it turned Canada into a majority English population over time. The French were then a minority. If the Loyalists didn't arrive, maybe French would be our first language and English our second. The French would get greater says as well, and might even form our government.

The Constitutional Act of 1791 divided Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. Lower Canada later was renamed Quebec, and Upper Canada was named Ontario. Loyalists coming in refuge from the American Revolution, didn't want to practice the mix of French and English laws. They wanted to keep only English laws.

The British Parliament then enacted the Constitutional

Act of 1791. Upper Canada had only English laws, while

Lower Canada kept their mix of laws. This is historically

significant because it led to Canadian Confederation, and

how Canada became a nation. The division of provinces led

to hard times, but eventually it led to the union of a nation. If

Quebec hadn't been split, it would lead to a French speaking

province (Ontario). Everything about this country would be

changed.

The American Revolution!

1775-1783

How did this affect Canada?

The American Revolution caused the border between USA and Canada, which would've changed our government, industry, and economy. Maybe I wouldn't be here today. Also, the Loyalists that fled in fear, changed Canada into an English speaking majority.Without that, maybe our first language would be French.

The American revolution was a rebellion by the Patriots in the Thirteen colonies against the British Government. They didn't like the British rules and wanted to be an independent country and follow their own rules. They made the Declaration of Independence in 1776, confident that they would win the war. Led by George Washington in The Battle Of Quebec, they fought hard and proud. Due to some mistakes by the generals, almost all the Patriots in the Battle Of Quebec were either killed or captured. However, after that the Patriots fought harder. Eventually they pushed the British to the brink, and when it seemed the British might hold off, the French joined the battle as allies of the Patriots. Together they defeated the British and in the Treaty of Paris they were officially an official country. The Quebec Act and the Royal Proclamation led to this rebellion. The American Revolution is historically significant because the American Revolution divided America from Canada. If it didn't happen, they would of been one big country. That would change the economy, government, and industry.

Conclusion!

In this presentation, I wanted to show how one event lead to another, and how one event wouldn't happen without the other event. I thought a tree was the best way to show that connection, as the roots of Canada, slowly climbing up and then the Canada we know today. The people at the top helped form that foundation, while the lonely boxes on the outside was to show something newsworthy, but didn't really fit into the connection of the other slide. Overall, I really enjoyed this unit, especially the projects. This is different from the slideshow we made earlier, because this shows the connection between each event, and also some main key events, that wasn't included and helped from Canada. I also think I included key information, summarizing each event in 1 slide. I hope you enjoyed this presentation

The Quebec Act

In 1774 the British enacted the Quebec Act of 1774. It allowed French people to speak their own language, practice their own religion, gave them rights, and extended their territory more west, which also outraged the Americans. This is historically significant because if it weren't for the Quebec Act, the king's plan was to convert the French people into English speaking Protestants. That would be very similar to how the Jesuit priests converted the Aboriginals to Christian. It ended very badly. So if Quebec was converted, Canada wouldn't be a bilingual country, and they wouldn't have the benefits of that. We wouldn't have the French people to fight alongside Canada years later. Canda would be a different place

The Royal Proclamation

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 gave the Aboriginals reserved land, and it was a factor leading to the American Revolution. It angered the Thirteen colonies that there would be no westward expansion for them. King George also feared a Native rebellion and since he had promised the Natives land, if they helped the British. This is historically significant because it angered the Thirteen Colonies eventually leading to the American

Revolution. It also gave the Natives land

and respect towards them. Maybe without

the Royal Proclamation, there wouldn't be

any Natives still alive today. Maybe in

anger they would've caused their own

rebellion. We won't know what would've

happened. But, I know the future would change. And that can lead to many things. It also excluded the French from political rights, and encouraged to change religion.

Seigneurial System!

New France and BNA 1713-1800

The Seigneurial System was the first official established form of land distribution in New France . A seigneur was responsible for governing his appropriate piece of lad and giving his tenants equal long strips of land in return for rent. I think this is historically significant because it was New France way of life for a very long time. It changes people's lives. Maybe without this system, New France might've had a rebellion on the rise for unfair government. Some people wouldn't have as good of a life. The siegneurs wouldn't have as much power, and New France wouldn't be as organized. Our way of life is different today. We pay taxes toward the government, not the siegneurs and we pay with paper money and coins, not food and animals. However, some similarities, we still have to pay to a certain someone for the land that we own, howver we know some people don't have as much power. The church isn't as important either.

The Seven Years war

The Expulsion of the Acadians

The Seven Years war started in 1756. It was a world wide conquest for land. In North America it was referred to the French Indian war. The Native allies also played a huge part in the war. They were used to scare the enemy which made a lot of Generals surrender. In 1759, The Battle of the Plains of Abraham General James Wolfe led the British to a huge victory over the French. After that, the French struggled and in 1763 the Treaty Of Paris was signed ceding almost all of New France to BNA. This is historically significant because maybe we would've had a different goverment, French speaking people, and many more. We would be a very difffernt country

The Acadians were people who lived in the province of Acadia,(a French Province). In the Queen Anne's War, Acadia was ceded to Britain. The Acadians wanted to remain neutral, but the British didn't trust them. They made the Oath of Allegiance which officially stated loyalty to Britain. Most Acadians refused. The Britain then threatened to kick them out of their land, and in 1730 many were deported, but most of them took the oath. in 1746 the French attempted a major expedition to capture Acadia, although they failed. However, it also gave the Acadians renewed hope to stay in there. Then in 1755, the British decided they had enough. On the brink of war, once again with the French, Governor Lawrence decided the Acadians were too dangerous. One by one they expelled the Acadians from their own land, unable to do a thing about it. This is historically significant because if the Acadians weren't expelled, maybe Nova Scotia would be a French majority today. Or the Loyalists arriving in refuge, might not have gone to Nova Scotia in fear of the French. Maybe they would've gone back to England, and the mass migration never would've happened, or not as large.

Fortress of Louisbourg 1719-1758

The Austrian Succession

In 1720, New France decided they should build a fort on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The little fishing port called Louisbourg was to be built to keep New France's main export of goods (The St.Lawrence river) intact. They also wanted to prevent a blockade from the British navy who were attempting to block off New France's supplies. Louisbourg became one of the most expensive and extensive forts in North America. It also became the largest fishing industry in New France. This is historically significant because the British could've easily created a blockade and take over their other fishing ports. That would've meant scarce food for the French and a possible deaths by hunger. Maybe the Seven years war wouldn't have happened, maybe their would've been a different war. A war shorter than the Seven Years war, since Louisbourg contributed greatly to te Seven years war, supplying troops, food, etc.

The Austrian Succession (1740-1748) was another war in a fight over land, where rivals fought rivals. The British and French were fighting once again in North America. The main battles were on the Maritime Islands/.The British troops captured the great fort of Louisbourg in 1745, however the French also captured important fishing ports, and in 1748 the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle ended the Austrian Succession. In the end no one really won, because France gave back most of their gained land, in return for Louisbourg. However, this is still historically significant because it caused New France to strengthen, Louisbourg and their other fishing ports. They also caused the British to strengthen their defense and in the Seven Years war, it proved their defense held strong.

The end of the Queen Anne's War! 1713

The conquest for land had ended temporarily as the Treaty of Utrecht was signed by the by all empires. This is historically significant because the treaty involved giving over Acadia and Newfoundland to the British. That changed the future dramatically as the Acadians attempted a life-long quest to stay neutral. It was then named Nova Scotia and was the home for many British Loyalists as years went by. Turning Acadia into an English speaking province over time.
