Effect of European Colonialism on African Culture

Overview of African Colonization

Audio and Video

-"Palm wine music" is a genre that started in the late 1800's (same time as the Berlin Conference)

-Maringa in Sierra Leon

-In the late 1800s and early 1900s, European countries colonized most of Africa .

-These countries were motivated primarily by the want for economical, political, and social power.

-The European forces included Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Turkey and the United States

-Moroccan national anthem

-"Hymne Chérifien"

-Anthem was used before French colonization

-After the country gained its independence, the music remained but the lyrics changed

-Country was colonized by Spanish, French and the Portuguese

-Ethiopia was never colonized

-The immigration of Europeans to Africa created division between people

-European traits, like language, food, and clothing were incorporated into the everyday African lifestyle

-Although most African countries broke away from their new European rulers, these aspects are still influential today

-African culture also became part of the lives of people still living in Europe

-Example: Use of the French and English language throughout Africa

-Also known as the Congo Conference or West African Conference

-A meeting held to settle the problems associated with African colonization in the 1880s

-Ensured that the division of the continent would take place without war between the Europeans

-Treaty known as the "Berlin Act"

-Agreements proved too unspecific to be successful

-A formal way to conclude the "scramble for Africa."

The "White Man's Burden"

Definition: "The task that white colonizers believed they had to impose their civilization on the black inhabitants of their colonies."

-A poem by the same name supports this idea

-Europeans thought that it was "up to the white race to provide care for their non-white subjects."

-This idea, as it is untrue, created many arguments, and still does today, a century since publication
