Mary Shelley did not fit in to the typical view of women.
She was a feminist philosopher and she and her work were taken seriously.
It was unusual for a woman to become a writer or poet
in the first place, so it was very unusual for her writings
to be published and accepted. That in general probably
motivated women and helped them see hope. Also, her views on feminism lead other women to see them and
want to change their roles.
Women were not respected in the family, the man
had the only real voice in the house. Men also also
had complete control of their woman. Since women
were not allowed to finish school, they were also seen
as intellectually challenged.
Women had many limitations in the 1800's.
They could not vote (or have anything to do
with politics), they were only allowed to learn
grammar in school, and love was not a
priority for them (their father decided who
the married.) Also, if they were not married,
their money belonged to their father. If
they were married, all their money
belonged to their husband.

-Women were not allowed to have any real jobs. They cleaned, cooked, sewed, etc. for the family, they tended to the children, and did whatever the man asked them to do.
