Passive Rec

Rationale

  • Passive rec is super important because it's something we are doing every single day and just don't realize it.
  • You're all probably sitting here thinkng, "What the heck is passive rec?"
  • No one 'knows' what it is.
  • But SURPRISE! You do know!
  • Do you play cards? Board games? Go to community events?

THAT'S PASSIVE REC!

  • In this manual you will find many activities that include games while sitting around a table, using household tools, or exploring the community and what it has to offer. You will be searching for hidden treasures and building your own.

  • Almost all activities can be adjusted according to what space you have to work with and what supplies are on hand.

  • We are providing you with an outline you can use as is, or that you are able to put your own spin on.

  • This manual is designed to be used by youth workers in group homes, however can be ran by anyone with leadership skills.
  • The purpose of this first session is to improve communication team work, and problem solving skills.
  • These important skills will be worked on and the participants won't even know it.
  • While working on skills, this session will be a lot of fun and help youth get involved in simple but fun activities.

  • This manual is deisgned to accommodate for any level of development both physical and academic.

  • Each youth will be on an equal playing field.

  • There are ways to build youth's self-esteem, communication, creativity, and utilize their strengths without the youth even knowing it, by having fun.

  • This manual is designed to fill space where youth are bored so they are less likely to use that time to do reckless things such as drugs, alcohol, and other illegal activity.

Picture yourself.

You are a youth worker in a group home during a cold winter storm.

Or rather, a hot summers day. You're either stuck inside with a bunch of teenagers because they CAN'T go outside, or stuck with a bunch of teenagers bothering you because they're 'bored'.

If you're picturing this right now, than this manual is perfect for you!

Need a reminder of the cold snowy PEI storms?

What is it?

Don't have an imagination?

  • Don't worry, we have you covered!

  • In this manual, you'll find the activities and information necessary to have fun, and the materials are little to no cost for you!

  • Don't forget about community. Our communities offer many different forms of entertainment and fun activities.

  • They are hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered by people like you!

  • It's a great way for youth to use their own skills and strengths to build a better, stronger team.
  • And youth will have to learn how to communicate with each other in an effective way through dyads and triads.
  • Sitting down to play a card game opens a door to communication, allowing youth to let down their walls and feel comfortabe in a safe environment.
  • Card games can be simple and fast or more challenging.

Vision Boards and Scrapbooking

  • In this session the games are fast, fun, and competitive.
  • It's challanging and takes good coordination and team work.
  • Most supplies can be found in your house or for an inexpensive price.
  • The youth will have a blast trying to beat the clock.
  • Our ideas are based on the hit game show 'Minute to Win It'!
  • We would set up a series of games and time each youth or duo on each activity.
  • You could have as many or as little different games as you'd like so time can be very accommodating.

Session 2

Community Exploration

  • Vision board is a creation of your dreams, goals, and your ideal future.
  • It's a powerful visual tool to motivate youth strive to be the best version of themselves.
  • Once you've made a vision board, hang it in a place where you can see it every day.
  • You can use pictures and magazines.
  • And Go Wild!

Scrapbooking

  • Scrapbooking is a way to capture favorite memories, friends, and family members.
  • It is a keepsake that will last a life time and can be done in your own unique way.
  • You can us old pictures or magazines to make collages for scrapbooks as a representation of things in your life.

Rationale

Community Exploration

Rationale

  • Vision boards are a great tool to identify the direction you want your life to head in.
  • It keeps you focused on the positive things in your life.
  • Will keep your attention focused on your intentions.
  • Scrapbooking captures your past memories and the special people in your life.
  • Both vision boards and scrapbooking are great ways to use pictures to express yourself in a non-verbal way.
  • The goal here is for the youth to use the resources available to them and use their research skills to find an activity to do.
  • This way the youth feel like they have some kind of control and an impact on what they get to do.
  • We want the youth to know that their opinions are important.
  • If they're given an opportunity to express their ideas, they will feel cared for and listened to.
  • We want to challenge the youth to each research a community activity, resource, or attraction that they would like to participate in as a group.
  • Give them 20 minutes to research and bring back an idea and they would each have 5-10 minutes(6-8 youth) to sell their activity to the group. Then the group would vote on which activity they want to do.
  • The other activities can be saved for another time.
