Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. A fluid with large viscosity doesn’t want to move. A fluid with low viscosity flows easily. Imagine a Styrofoam cup with a hole in the bottom. If I then pour honey into the cup I will find that the cup drains very slowly. That is because honey's viscosity is large compared to other liquids' viscosities. If I fill the same cup with water, the cup will drain much more quickly. This is what viscosity is and now you will find out how to figure out viscosity in liquids.

I will do this by getting a glass and filling it with one of the liquids. Then I will drop the marble at the same height every time and I will time this and record the time to see how fast it takes for the marble to reach the bottom. Then I will repeat this two more times and do it for every liquid. After I will take the times and find the average time for all of the liquids.

The liquid with the faster time will have the least viscosity and the liquid with the slower time will have the higher viscosity. Now let's try it!!

Glass

Glass marble

Liquids to test, such as

Maple syrup

Honey

Vegetable oil

Molasses

Milk

Water

Stopwatch

The liquid that I think is going to be the fastest is...

#1 Water

#2 Milk

#3 Vegetable Oil

#4 Syrup

#5 Honey

#6 Molasses

I think the water will have the fastest time and the least viscosity. I also think the molasses will be the slowest and have the highest viscosity. :)

Liquids Trial #1 Trial #2 Trial #3 Average

Water 00:00.5 00:00.3 00:00.1 00:00.3

Milk 00:00.7 00:00.4 00:00.5 00:00.53

Veggie Oil 00:00.7 00:00.9 00:00.6 00:01.13

Molasses 00:25.3 00:23.4 00:25.1 00:24.6

Honey 00:21.8 00:21.3 00:20.7 00:21.27

Syrup 00:01.9 00:01.5 00:01.7 00:01.7

I was curious on how fast would the marble be if the Cup was empty.

Conclusion

By: Cassy Lougheed

So in the end, 1st was water. 2nd was milk. 3rd was Vegetable Oil. 4th was Syrup. 5th was Honey and molasses was last.

My hypothesis was correct.

*I only filmed the first trial
