Importance to Greek Mythology:

Myths:

Characteristics:

Two myths that interest Dionysus would be the love he had for a young satyr named Ampelos and the discovery of Ariadne on the island of Naxos.

Dionysus became one of the most important gods in everyday life. He became associated with many different key concepts such as rebirth after death or the idea that under the influence of wine, someone could feel possessed or "taken over" by a greater power.

Dionysus has great joy and ecstasy but on the other hand horrible anger, which represents wine's natural nature.

The finding of Ariadne:

Ariadne fell in love at first sight of Dionysus and helped him by giving him a magic sword and a ball of thread so that he could find his way out of the Minotaur's labyrinth. She ran away with Theseus after he achieved his goal, and according to Homer was punished by Artemis with death.

Hero:

Representatives:

I would say Dionysus is a hero because he has some great key concept ideas that has made people proud and he has done no major harm. He is the god of wine modeling the nature of it.

Dionysus is represented by the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), a drinking cup, a leopard and fruiting vines.

Family:

  • Parents: His mother is a mortal named Semele and his father is god of all gods Zeus.

"god of the vine"

  • Divine Children: Priapos- god of vegetable gardens and Iakknos- a god of the Eleusinian Mysteries
  • Hero Children: Oniopion- king of Khios and Delaneria- wife of Herakles
