Zwicky was first intrigued by cosmic rays

  • Cosmic rays are rays of highly charged atoms
  • Zwicky came up with the idea that stars exploded
  • Introduced the term "supernova" in 1931
  • Named it "supernova" to differentiate from a "nova"

Where Zwicky received his edcuation

  • Earned Ph.D. in physics from Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich
  • Joined California Institute of Technology in 1925
  • Changed to astronomical research at Caltech

Zwicky begins discovering supernovas in the 1930s

  • Convinced director of Mt. Wilson observatory to create a special telescope
  • Recorded 12 supernovas in 3 years
  • Noticed light was being distorted by the gravitational pull of galaxies

Introduces Dark Matter

  • Looked at the Coma Galaxy in 1933
  • Predicted that there was a huge amount of unseen matter
  • Concluded that there was not enough matter to hold galaxies together

Where he came from

  • Fritz Zwicky was born on February 14,1898 in Varna, Bulgaria
  • Sent to grandparents' house
  • There he was going to learn business
  • Instead began learning astrophysics

First to describe a neutron star

  • Star collapses in on itself creating a star with HUGE amounts of mass
  • Neutron stars are also EXTREMELY dense
