It views tourism from a holistic perspective; not just from the impacts and forms but in terms of underlying structures and functions.
supports critical analysis of tourism and is not inclined to labeling certain forms of tourism.
Example: Sustainable tourism development concept.
PLATFORM
- is a common theme shared by each batch of studies of tourism.
- is very similar to the concept of paradigm which is a way of looking at a nature of something, identifying issues which are most important to consider and thinking of ways to solve those issues.
SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATFORM
- It embraces "participatory processes involving open dialogue inclusivity, resource distribution, equity, equality, pro-poor planning; gender sensitivity responsiveness to diversity".
- It states that tourism that not only exploits community resources but also tries to “put back” into the community.
ADAPTANCY PLATFORM
It acknowledges that mass tourism has negative impact but these can be minimized or avoided by "alternative tourism" which refers to low-volume low impact forms of tourism.
2 sets that constitutes Alternative Tourism:
- Environmentally Oriented: Ecotourism, soft tourism, and green tourism.
- Socially Oriented: Altruistic tourism, volunteer tourism, just tourism, accessible tourism, ethnic tourism, community -based tourism, responsible tourism, pro-poor tourism and fair trade tourism.
CAUTIONARY PLATFORM
- It views tourism as a bad thing and decries the negative effects of mass tourism that the advocacy platform has endangered.
