Gordimer has been in trouble for her writing because they have thought that her books were racist because she was an white African writing books about black people. And during her time , racism was still in tact . It is shown in the story that the african people had to run away from their homes and the government did not like the image of that. Gordimer says it is the judgment of a 'nobody'. But the decision by South Africa's most important province to ban one of her novels from schools is an ironic and painful blow to how Africa handles intellectual decisions. As academic writers form around the world supporting Gordimer, a famous South African-born author Justin Cartwright tries to help Gordimer in her uphill battle with society
She is an outsider because not many people liked her for writing her stories about black people. She had been shunned by the government by having her books banned and everything. While the protagonist has been shunned by bandits raiding her village and taking everything that they own.
The whole story was full of sadness and only at the end of the story did it show some happy moments. This sequencing of events made the reader sympathize for the characters more and allowed us to visualize their hardships. The story constantly displayed scenes of losing things over and over again. First it was the bandits raiding their house "We were frightened to go out, even to do our business, because the bandits did come"(120). After that they lost their grandfather "So everyone waited for our grandfather to catch up. But he didn't"(126). And finally in the last paragraph the family reached their destination but the problem wasn't over. "But when the war is over-you won't be allowed to stay here? Don't you want to go home?" Even after the struggles through Krugar Park they still have problems they have to face. You can never stop resting, life is always a constant struggle.
Gordimer is much like the protagonist because even though she had everything taken from her, she has enough determination to go on and fight for what she believes in. The journey through Krugar Park can be a metaphor for Gordimer's situation.
The children think of Kruger park as a wasteland used for resource and also a country for the animals. The impression of Kruger park changes drastically for the children as the story progresses because during the walk through Kruger park , they've encountered many dangerous thing's along the way. Starting from the elephant's , lion's , people etc. The impressions change from a country for animals and resources to a vast dangerous flatland filled with hardships.
At first the children were amazed by the vast majority of animals. It must of been an experience for them, but when they realized that the animals could of been a danger for them, they quickly changed their impressions of them. "I prayed to God to make the lions take someone on the edge and go"(126).
The theme of this story is that life is a constant struggle. For some of us, life is a constant battle broken up by brief interludes of stunning happiness and serenity.
The family in the "Ultimate Safari" realized that since the alternative to life is death, they will go through all the opportunities to find a way to struggle.
The author also gives visual perspectives from the girls point of view. She explains what she'd have seen and what she had encountered. These additions are effective because it lets the imagination wonder and think of what it is like to be there. The author used first person point of view to narrate the story. First Person narrative includes you in the narration and story, and creates a better reading experience making it more involving and effective. The advantages of First Person is to establish a relation between reader and protagonist to create sympathy towards the main character.
When the girl realizes that she felt like going in circles when she was traveling to Kruger park , It felt like she was stuck inside a maze . The travelers had to endure hunger and not being able to get a full nights sleep because they had to keep moving at night and day or else they die from starvation.
The second theme in "The ultimate safari" is hope. Even though the outcome is not known, the feeling that something that will go in a particular direction, which you favor. The family constantly believed in hope to survive.
THANKS FOR LISTENING !!
The descriptions the author used made the story very realistic. And the author constantly reminded you that Krugar Park is not a zoo, but is a forest full of threatening animals that can take away your lives in an instant. "There was a man in our village without legs - a crocodile took them off"(122)
The last theme is love and perseverance. Despite the different tradegies that have occurred, the family knew that together they had love and money can't buy happiness. "Our grandmother gave up her church clothes to someone in exchange for for some dried mealies..."(122) The grandmother stripped her valuable belongings because the only goal was to survive, to see a brighter tomorrow.
Due to the first person narration, we can easily tap into the lives of their family by reading. Along with the descriptive words the author chooses to explain her surroundings, the reader feels like he/she is inside the story. The first-person narrative point of view allows the reader to obtain the narrator’s perspective of the plot, character and events. It usually contains the narrator’s experiences, observations, thoughts, feelings and motivations. The first-person point of view relays information the narrator has overheard or what she is thinking.
Protagonist - The daughter was the protagonist because she was the main character and the narrator. The daughter was a flat and dynamic character. She did not have a complex personality and was only there to fill the roles for the eyes of the audience. She is a dynamic character because her views on life has changed ever since the bandits raided her home and when her grandfather was lost in the grass.
Story was set in Africa, 27 November 1988. The bandits in the story were thought to be members of Renamo, the Mozambique rebel group that tried for years, with the support of South Africa, to overthrow Mozambique's Marxist government.
Antagonist - There were two antagonists in the story. The first one were the bandits because they camped around the family's house to steal from them. They were the main reason why they the family had to go throw Krugar Park to run away from them
The second antagonist were the animals. Because the family had to constantly watch out for the lions and elephants because they could jump out and eat them at any moment. These two characters are both flat and static characters because we have very little knowledge of them and they don't reappear in the story at the end
Nadine Gordimer was born in November 20 1923 near Springs, a coal-mining town in South Africa. She was the daughter of Jewish immigrants. Her father, Isidore Gordimer, was a watchmaker and her mother, Hannah Gordimer, was from London, England. She first took an interest in writing when she was a child and her stories were published in the Johannesburg’s biggest newspaper. Most of her work contained the South Africa’s system of apartheid (any system or practice that separates people according to race). An example of apartheid was “The Ultimate Safari” because of how Mozambique, a country in Africa, was in Civil War and speaking out could get you arrested or killed. Due to this, the people from Mozambique feared the whites. Gordimer knew that writing about Mozambique this way could get her killed. Instead, it resulted of some of her work to be banned. As well, when she testified as a defence witness for black activists in December, 1989, it caused more of her works to be banned by the white minority government. Two years later, she was the first woman in 25 years to achieve the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1991. One of her favourite quotes is “Salvation, for the whites, lies in being sincere even against one’s better judgement.” by Andre’ Gide.
TONE
"The Ultimate Safari" opens with the narrator's cryptic and mysterious statement that sets the tone of the story: "That night our mother went to the shop and she didn't come back. Ever." The narrator of the story never finds out what happened to her mother, or to her father and had also left one day never to return. The presumption, however, is that both her parents are dead by the time her story unfolds; her people are at war, and her village has been beset by "bandits" that have left the villagers destitute and frightened, and all evidence points to those so-called "bandits" as the cause of her parents' disappearance.
Man Vs Nature
The conflict of the story is man vs nature. The living circumstances were persevere since the bandits came and took everything from the village so the girl and a couple of people had decided to leave and to partake in the refugee camps. But the journey was rough , they had to go through Kruger park because of the fence that blocked their way. It had many dangerous animals ranging from elephants to lions. And they had to live under strict rules from their guide in order to survive the journey
Man vs Man
The sole reason why the family had to go through Krugar park was because of the bandits. It is idiotic for humans to attack other humans while there are so many threats out there. Instead of working together, the bandits have thought of a greedy way to take away everything from people just to enhance their lives by a small amount
Irony
The author has chosen to relate story as seen by the young girl. It is to lend an objective view point to the events and characters in it. By doing so, he means to highlight the irony of the adult world. The children know little or nothing of this world. They symbolize innocence and simplicity. The world of the adults is characterized by cruelty, deception and indifference. Escape from death and the need for stealth while walking through Kruger Park are its essential features and is a method to intensifies the irony in the story.
