Oxygen toxicity is a condition resulting from the harmful effects of breathing molecular oxygen (O2) at elevated partial pressures.
This occurs in three principal settings: underwater diving, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the provision of supplemental oxygen, particularly to premature infants.
- Oxygen Toxicity is a risk for underwater diving because when they go deeper into the water the pressure in their oxygen tank gets higher and higher
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is breathing 100% oxygen while under increased atmospheric pressure. Oxygen Toxicity occurs in this because the oxygen is at a higher pressure because the atmosphere pressure has been increased.
- Supplemental Oxygen is when someone has breathing issues and oxygen is given to them this is also called Oxygen Therapy. Oxygen Toxicity occurs in this because sometimes when they are breathing the oxygen through the mask they are breathing about 40% of molecular oxygen (O2) through a pressured mask.
Central nervous system oxygen toxicity can cause seizures, brief periods of rigidity followed by convulsions and unconsciousness. Pulmonary oxygen toxicity results in damage to the lungs, causing pain and difficulty in breathing. Severe cases can result in cell damage and death.
There are two widely recognized types of oxygen toxicity. Named for the systems of the body that they affect, these are pulmonary oxygen toxicity and central nervous system (CNS) oxygen toxicity. Although both are most likely to be experienced by divers, others can be exposed to such toxicities as well. Both pose health dangers, but of the two, CNS toxicity is the most dangerous because serious symptoms tend to come on more quickly and with fewer warning signs.
An oxygen toxicity induced seizure underwater requires that the diver is brought to the surface as soon as practicable. The only way to treat oxygen toxicity is to take the victum away from the pressured oxygen.
