Destruction at Kamchatka

There was no major loss of life because of the earthquake. There was however a significant amount of damage due to the tsunami that occurred after.

Effects of Kamchatka

Destruction

George Curtis took this picture at Kaiko Bay, near Haleiwa. As you can see the power of the tsunami caused a lot of damage to the surrounding area. This was triggered by the earthquake in Kamchatka.

Even though there was no loss of life on Kamchatka there was a significant amount of damage to buildings/structures.

Can we prevent this?

No we cannot prevent these sort of disasters. Earthquakes are very unpredictable and so are the tsunamis that come after. The best that we can do is build flood walls and construct buildings that can withstand the shaking of an earthquake.

Earthquake epicenter was located just off shore of Kamchatka, Russia

Additional Damage

There was damage all around the pacific. No major loss of life was reported but there were heavy reports of structural damage due to tsunamis. Places effected include...

  • Hawaii
  • Alaska
  • California
  • Coastal parts of Russia

Aftermath

In time since the 1952 earthquake the Kamchatka Peninsula has been cleaned up. Although Kamchatka still has frequent earthquakes (due to their proximity to a plate boundary) they have not had an earthquake as severe as the earthquake on November 4th, 1952.

Kamchatka's Plate Boundary

This plate boundary is a convergent oceanic-continental fault. This is what creates the volcanoes and ocean trench nearby.
