Christine and Walter Collins

Gordon Stewart Northcott

1906- October 2, 1930

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada and raised in British Columbia, Stewart was spoiled by his parents- Sarah Louise and George Cyrus Northcott.

  • His mother cared very deeply for him to the point of obsession.
  • He would later claim to have been sodomized by his own father.

Christine Collins spent the rest of her life looking for her son after he was abducted by Stewart.

  • The police brought back her "son".
  • The boy was not her child. With the authorities not on her side, she was admitted to a psych ward until the impostor confessed.
  • The reason: Arthur Hutchins from Illinois wanted to go to Hollywood to meet his cowboy hero.

The Murdered

Changeling

1926-1928: Stewart brutally tortured and murdered 3-20 boys.

What led the family to move to Los Angeles?

Northcott and Christine Collins

In pursuit of the American Dream, George and Sarah Louise moved their family to California in 1924. Accusations arose that Gordon had tried to sexually assault a child, a neighbor named Phillip Scott, who he had befriended.

  • When police came to interrogate Stewart, his parents were quick to defend him and were angered by the thought that someone would think their precious son would do such a thing.

Unidentified Migrant Worker

The Winslow Brothers

After their abduction in Pomona, letters would be sent to their family about their "whereabouts".

This is Stewart's first victim.

  • Had resisted Stewart's sexual assault
  • Shot in the chest

Stewart then beheaded the boy and forced Sanford to get rid of the remains.

Walter Collins

Stewart knew this boy because he used to shop at his former workplace.

  • Surprise visit: Sarah Louise stopped by and saw the boy beaten and bruised.
  • To protect her son, she took

an ax and gave him the first blow.

  • Now all of them were "equally as guilty."

Jessie Clark

Captured

Stewart's mom left her husband to flee to Canada with her son.

  • The two were soon captured and sent back to California where they would be put on trial for their crimes.
  • They would also admit to their incestuous relationship during their trials.

The Wineville Chicken Coop

She played a key role in her brother's freedom.

  • Letters: Sanford's letters seem "off" so she decides to leave Canada to visit her brother.
  • Visitation: She sees right through their act and gets Sanford to confess
  • Swearing to secrecy, she did not confront her uncle.
  • Immigration: Sanford gets deported after she tells them that he is in the US illegally and not attending school.

Sanford's Confession

Gordon Stewart Northcott

Sarah Louise Northcott

After being deported, Sanford told police everything.

  • They didn't believe him at first until they led an investigation and visited the chicken ranch in Wineville.
  • Sanford died in 1991 as a veteran of WWII and a father of two children.

He confessed to killing five boys but later retracted this statement.

  • He was very attention-seeking, arrogant and showed no remorse for his actions.
  • Found guilty and was convicted of the murders of the Lewis and Nelson Winslow, and an unidentified Mexican boy.

October 2, 1930- Stewart is hanged.

She originally confessed to the murder of 9 year old Walter Collins, but later retracted this statement.

  • She tried to take credit for all to protect her son but they did not believe her.
  • During her trial, she pleaded guilty to the murder.
  • She escaped the death penalty because of her gender.

She was sentenced to life in prison but got out after only 11 years for good behavior.

Wacky Claims During Prison Time

  • Her son was innocent
  • Gordon was the illegitimate son of an English nobleman
  • Her husband had raped his daughter (Winnefred) and Gordon Stewart was the child resulting from that rape making her the grandmother
  • Gordon was sexually abused by the entire family

Not soon after the sexual assault accusations, Stewart asked his mother if he could start a chicken farm and so Sarah Louise bought him a secluded farm, miles away from civilization, in Wineville of Riverside County.

Mira Loma (Wineville) changed its town name to dissasociate its community from the murders in 1930.

Sanford Clark

(13-15)

In 1926, Stewart's sister- Winnefred, sent her son to America to tend to the chicken farm.

  • Stewart promised that his sister's son would be given the opportunity to get an education and share in the profits.
  • Sanford was instead beaten and raped by his uncle which eventually led to killing boys with an ax and dismembering them in the fear and sick manipulation of Stewart.
