Generally dark gray to dark brown in color, they have huge heads and enormous crescent-shaped mouths filled with sharp, translucent teeth. Some angler fish can be quite large, reaching 3.3 feet (1 meter) in length. Most however are significantly smaller, often less than a foot.

Did you know...

Habitat of the Angler Fish.

The angler fish can be bioluminescent.

Nickname is the common black devil

Lifespan is 20 years or more

Their habitats are found world wide.

Inhabit a depth of about 3,000 meters.

The thing that hangs off of its head is called a bioluminescent protrusion.

The bioluminescent protrusion is used to get prey.

The bioluminescent protrusion is created by millions of bacteria.

Anglerfish live in the midnight zone. However, some deep-sea varieties live in the bathypelagic zone.

Reproduction!

The angler fish's diet.

This is one of the most unusual methods ever. Since the male is much smaller than the female and different in color. A male, when grown, loses its digestive system so it must latch on to a female. It then becomes a part of the female, and she can hold six at a time. They then become fused, after that she is able to lay her eggs which come in a sheet about two or three feet (about one meter) wide and about 30 feet (9 meters) long.

How it reacts with others!

Angler fish mainly feed on other fish but can also eat marine snails, clams, worms and other crustaceans. Anglers from the deep seas can consume copepods, fish and other worms.

The angler fish is very defensive and protective of itself. It has been known to attack humans when threatened.
