The Fall of Rome Timeline

By: Christine Villavicencio & Kim Muset

Inflation and Disease

268 A.D.

Trying to Make a Change

With inflation causing tax and prices to rapidly rise and money losing its value, Rome's citizens begin to barter. Then, a plague rises in Rome so deadly it kills every 1 out of 10 people. Now there is a lack of soldiers to protect Rome.

With Rome doing so poorly, there were people trying to save it.

284 A.D.

  • Emperor Diocletian

He split Rome into 4 pieces and had each part ruled by an official. He would still hold authority over all officials. He also set prices for good and wages for workers and made it so no one could ever quit their job.

However, most citizens just ignored him.

Throughout the 6th century, more fighting and loss of control continues. In 1453, Constantinople is taken over by the Ottoman Turks and the Eastern/Byzantine Empire has ended.

Western and Eastern Roman Empires

395 A.D.

  • After the death of Emperor Theodosius, the Roman Empire is permanently divided in half. As time passes, the Eastern Roman Empire (later known as the Byzantine Empire) distances itself from the declining like the Western Roman Empire did.

Constantine & Theodosius

  • Constantine

306 A.D.

As the first Christian emperor, Constantine made many laws in the favor of Christianity. He also moved the capital to the entire eastern side of Rome. This made Rome split into two parts;the Eastern and Western side.

The empire begins to decline rapidly

Odoacer Rules

  • Theodosius

476 A.D.

He continues to break down the empire into smaller sections

  • Germanic general, Odoacer, kills Orestes, who proclaims Romulus Augustus Western Emperors. He forces Romulus Augustus to leave, and proclaims himself King of Italy. This is the traditional date for the fall of the western Roman Empire. The Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire) continues on.

But there is still more to come....

*Romulus Augustus

*Odoacer

Rome Becomes Weaker

468 A.D.

  • The Vandals fight both Western and Eastern Empire. The naval expedition ends in a failure. Soon, more emperors take over and fighting continues.

Thanks for watching! We hoped you learned more about the Fall of Rome!

Overall, the Roman Empire fell because of a combination of such factors as the spread of Christianity, lack of leadership, money troubles, and an unloyal military.

Invaders Take Over

425 A.D.

5th centurty; 410 A.D.

  • Alaric, King of the Visigoths, takes over Rome.

*Alaric

Valentinian III rules Western Empire

447 A.D. - Eastern Empire loses to Atilla the Hun

*Atilla

Different emperors die, and different emperors take over which causes corruption because some of these emperors are invaders taking over more land.
