The Black Loyalist

When the african people came to America they were put in slavery and were treated poorly. Back then America was mainly Caucasian people. So when they saw african people with a darker skin tone, they thought they were weird, different and odd.The Caucasian people treated them as less, discriminated these african descendants and were very racist. Slaves use to get whipped and beaten with leather belts, put in steaming hot boiler rooms for days and would get executed by patriot rebels if they were to try to run away.This was all during the war of 1812.

A Black Loyalist was a person that lives in British America from african descent. A lot of Black Loyalists came from South Africa and Sierra Leone. The african people left their villages because it was unsafe and there was not enough medical and financial help. In this time Africa was very poor so it was hard to live a healthy safe life. Over 50,000 african people left their country and moved to America feeling safe.

The Treaty

In 1782.The african descendants wanted to fight for Britain and decided to escape to Britain because of their loyalty. This is why they are called LOYALISTS.

30,000 escaped to british land and the 20,000 that were left, were killed or put back in slavery. The Leader of the Black Loyalists was Moses Wilkinson who made a treaty on behalf of all african descendents which asked if all Black Loyalists could fight for the british in trade for their freedom as human beings.They served as soldiers, laborers,Ship Pilots and Cooks.

In 1783 when the Black loyalist lost hope and faith in winning the the war of 1812, 3000 of them evacuated to Nova Scotia through the underground railroad and made communities in Birchtown.This started the growth of population for African-Canadians and now their are African-Canadians everywhere in Canada.

Without the Black Loyalists Canada wouldn't of been the way it is now.African-Canadians have freedom now.When the Black Loyalists were fighting in war they give other black people all over the world strength and confidence to do what ever they want when they grow up.Now and Then.The Black Loyalists are the root of our Black History.Without them we wouldn't have what we have as black people in our genes.The stereotypes of all black people comes from Black Loyalists. For example the stereotype that black people are athletic is because when they were enslaved they were put to heavy lifting jobs.There is still racism in Canada but not as much.
