"'Ford help him!' said Bernard, and averted his eyes. 'Ford helps those who help themselves.' And with a laugh, actually a laugh of exultation, Helmholtz Watson pushed his way through the crowd" (Huxley 213).

"' O brave new world, O brave new world ...' In his mind the singing words seemed to change their tone. They had mocked him through his misery and remorse, mocked him with how hideous a note of cynical derision!" (Huxley 210).

Analysis

Quote Three

  • Police come spraying the mob with soma vapor
  • Synthetic Music Box plays a relaxing message to calm the riot
  • Deltas begin to cry, kissing and hugging each other
  • Police take John and Helmholtz quietly
  • Bernard tries to leave without being noticed, but the police call him over as a friend of the prisoners
  • Bernard briefly debates denying his relationship with John and Helmholtz
  • The three are taken away in a police car

Analysis

Upon arriving at the hospital Bernard sees John is in danger from the riot. Instead of trying to help John, Bernard asks Ford to help him. Helmholtz says Ford helps those who help themselves because instead of talking about making society better, John is actually taking action and attempting to change the society. The people of Brave New World avert to Ford for help because they are incapable of helping themselves.

Summary

"Suddenly, from out of the Synthetic Music Box a Voice began to speak. The Voice of Reason, the Voice of Good Feeling. The sound-track roll was unwinding itself in Synthetic Anti-Riot Speech Number Two (Medium Strength)" (Huxley 214).

Quote One

Analysis

  • When John leaves the Hospital for the Dying he sees one hundred and sixty-two Deltas waiting to receive their soma
  • John describes the Deltas as maggots crawling on his mother's death
  • "O brave new world" (Huxley 210) John's tone towards Brave New World changes
  • Sees the people of Brave New World as slaves to soma
  • Becomes an opportunity for John to make a change
  • John's opinion of Brave New World changes and he now does not see it as a the great Other Place Linda once told him about
  • Sees the people as slaves and too conditioned to realize what the use of soma is doing to them
  • Ironically quotes The Tempest - John is disgusted in their inability to be individuals and illustrates his changed perception on Brave New World

When John used to previously quote The Tempest, he was speaking highly of the Other Place. When John says the quote in Chapter 15, the connotation changes. When saying this quote, Johns refers back to the times where Linda would praise Brave New World. After physically seeing life in the Other Place, John has become disturbed and appalled by the people of society and society itself.

Summary

Contrasts

Class Discussion - Think of the ways the characters juxtapose each other in the chapter. What are some of the major differences between the characters or individual character's mentalities from the previous chapters?

Technology VS Society

Let's Have a Debate

Left side of the class - you are society. You are debating if/how society has a control over technology.

Right side of the class - you are technology. You are debating if/how technology has a control over society.

Which way would you rather live?

"Science is knowledge. Technology is what you do with that knowledge."

Quote Three Analysis

The use of the Synthetic Music Box in Chapter 15 symbolizes the governments control on society. The Music Box was used to calm down the people and keep them under control. The Music Box helped to create a sense of peace among those within the riot.
