In both these studies the research is going against the societal norms of the time, but the research they conduct is more important than the moral boundaries they violate.

The morality of scientific experiments can be ignored if the reward that the research being conducted could provide outweighs the controversy over whether it is wrong or right.

Morality Of Science

Eugenics

-trying to make a perfect race

-Twins

-NAZIS

When it all goes bad...

Syphilis Testing

George Bernard Shaw once said “All great truths begin as blasphemies.”

-Tuskegee University

-Guatemala Protitutes

inexcusable violations of human rights

When they have good intentions...

“Mengele, the “Angel of Death” was one of the most notorious of the Nazi physicians. Some of his most horrifying work involved genetically related experiments who were performed on children who were twins, many of whom he personally killed. “

but something doesn't turn out right..

“Dubbed “The Monster Study” by some of Johnson’s peers who were horrified that he would experiment on orphan children to prove a theory, the experiment was kept hidden for fear Johnson’s reputation would be tarnished in the wake of human experiments conducted by the Nazis during World War II.”

The Monster Study

-Orphans

-Speech Research

THESIS:

Why i chose this...

-I like science

-I like corrupt stuff

-i like controversies

It seemed like a good mix

“our society has had to confront the reality that the Nazi doctors were guilty of premeditated murder masqueraded as research”

“This project was undertaken with the utmost caution. The reader should be aware that the moral climate in the Jewish community is unforgiving to those who find any redeeming merit from the Nazi horrors. Anyone who dares suggest the historical lessons which can be learned from the Holocaust, or from the victims' suffering, risks being labeled a heretic or a sensationalist bent on distorting history for personal gain. Many in the community seriously fear that insights might replace condemnation of the Nazi evil”

Then the US used some of the Nazi research..

which understandably upset people who the experiments effected...

Stem cell Research

Negative

Positive

"We should not mess with human life."

"Humans should not be trying to play God"

Some argue that stem cell research in the far future can lead to knowledge on how to clone humans. It is hard to say whether this is true, but we have seen devastating consequences of other research-programs, even with good intentions, such as nuclear research.

Parkinson’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease

Heart Diseases, Stroke and Diabetes (Type 1)

Birth Defects

Spinal Cord Injuries

Replace or Repair Damaged Organs

Reduced Risk of Transplantation (You could possibly get a copy of your own heart in a heart-transplantation in the future

Stem cells may play a major role in cancer

-They destroy the embryos they use

When it's okay

The scientific benefits outweigh the moral questionably of the experiment

Renaissance Body Snatching

PROBABLY NOT THIS CREEPY...

What it was..

Why they didnt think that was very cool..

Anatomy students and artists stole bodies from morgues and graveyards to study the human body

-Church looked down on it

(Considered Blasphemous)

how would you feel if they took your family members body to dissect without your consent?

Why they didn't do anything about it..

What this did for us ..

Famous Artists

Michael Angelo

Leonardo Da Vinci

Artists

Cool art

Very influential in the church

because they painted cool stuff for them

Anatomy Students

first ideas of how human body works (ORGANS)

Conclusion: Why does it matter?

-Science is important and we should always think about ways to advance ourselves and our society

- We must find a way to still have a respect for life though while pursuing these advances.
