History of Greektown

Housing & Renovation

  • Martin O''Malley launched a massive renovation of Greektown that included:
  • additional playgrounds and alley cleanings
  • 600 condos in 4 12-story buildings, 250 apartments, and 179 town homes
  • renovation was stalled in 2008, but plan is almost completed
  • Athena Square development is almost fully sold - 121 homes
  • Vacancy rate declined
  • Next up and coming neighborhood

Crime & Safety

  • Greek Mafia ran a cocaine ring during the 80's between Baltimore, Philadelphia, and D.C. , leader surrendered in 1989
  • Currently, very safe neighborhood - implemented safety programs in 2003
  • off duty cops patrol the area at night
  • As of 2000, there are 16, 764 members of the community
  • Population is aging and declining, many are moving out of the neighborhood
  • Latino population is increasing, most live on the west end, while many Greek-Americans live on the east end
  • As of 2010, the area is 50.9% white, 22% hispanic, 17.8% African American, 6.3% Asian

  • 9 boys were the first Greeks to arrive in Baltimore as refugees of the Chios Massacre - the slaughtering of thousands of Greeks by the Ottomans during the Greek War of Independence
  • Greek immigrants started settling in large numbers in the 1890's
  • Peak migration began, lasting from the 1930s'-1950's
  • 1940 - 1,200 Greek Americans living in Baltimore
  • Most Greek Jews immigrated in the 1950's from Athens and Thessaloniki
  • Immigration and Nationality of 1965 - allowed for the immigration of thousands of Greeks, population increase lasted unitl the 1980's
  • Greek immigrants established the Greek Orthodox Church in 1906 & the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in 1909
  • A small community had been established by the 1920's & the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church was built to serve the community
  • Gained political representation in 1959 with the election of Peter Angelos to the Baltimore City Council
