What Type Of Firewood Burns Out The Slowest?

Conclusion

My Hypothesis was correct that the less dense wood would burn out the fastest and the most dense wood would burn out the slowest.

I learned that it is not easy to like a raw piece of wood and that it wouldn't be easy to light a piece of wood without a lighter.

Hypothesis

My hypothesis is that the densest wood will burn the slowest and the least dense wood will burn the fastest.

So the Pine wood would burn out at a faster rate and the Oak wood would burn out at a slower rate.

Data And Results

Why did I do this Experiment?

Design And Procedure

My results were that the least dense wood, the Pine wood burned out the fastest at 4 minutes and 25 seconds. The wood that burned the slowest was the Oak wood at 6 minutes and 16 seconds. Then the Fir wood burned out at 5 minutes and 56 seconds and the Alder wood burned out at 5 minutes and 10 seconds.

To get these results I did my experiment 2 times and used the results of the most successful one.The first time the wood burned out too soon.

I did this experiment to find out what type of wood burns the best for fireplaces so that people know which wood will burn the longest or the quickest depending on whether they want it to burn for a long time or a short time.

  • First I had to get the wood (I went to Home Depot)
  • The wood I got was Fir, Alder, Oak, and Pine (Home Depot didn't have any other kinds that where real and natural woods)
  • I cut the wood to be the same length to make sure that my results were accurate (1.5 in. by 1.5 in.)
  • Then I let the wood sit in the same place for a couple of days to make sure that one isn't dryer than the other etc...
  • Then I tested each wood to see how long each one took to burn.
  • last but not least I recorded all the info I got.
