  • Protects basic freedoms like speech, religion, press, and assembly
  • Does have limits
  • Very important amendment

  • Very contentious
  • Vague wording brings about many problems
  • 16th Income Tax is allowed
  • 17th Allows for people to elect senators
  • 18th makes liquor illegal
  • 21st allows it again
  • 22nd presidents can only stay in office for 2 terms

  • These change the constitution and become the highest laws we follow
  • Hard to add new ones
  • First step:
  • 2/3 of Congress has to agree on it
  • Second Step:
  • 3/4 of states need to ratify (agree)
  • Privacy based
  • Soldiers can't be housed in your home during peace (3rd)
  • No illegal search and seizures (4th)
  • Voting Rights
  • African Americans can vote (15th)
  • Women can vote (19th)
  • No more polling taxes (24th)
  • Age to vote decreased from 21 to 18 (26th)

  • Rights in constitution can't be denied because of race (14th)
  • Can't deny vote by race (15th)
  • Due process and legal rights

  • Don't have to testify against self
  • Fair and speedy trial (6th)
  • Trial by jury (7th)
  • No cruel and unusual punishment (8th)

9th and 10th

  • Keep government small
  • People have rights not laid out here and government can't infringe on them (9th)
  • Any power not listed in constitution belongs to the states (10th)
