Further Expansion
- In 1450s, slaves worked on Portuguese island to extract sugar from plantations.
- Over next 60 years, expanded to Santo Domingo (present day Dominican Republic)
- Next, the Europeans expanded to the New World beginning the Triangular Trade Route
- Slaves were taken from Africa and taken to the Caribbean and Europe
- Africans were traded for manufactured and raw materials
- Were treated as if they were supplies, not people
- Approximately 600 slaves were transported on each ship
