  • In 1450s, slaves worked on Portuguese island to extract sugar from plantations.
  • Over next 60 years, expanded to Santo Domingo (present day Dominican Republic)
  • Next, the Europeans expanded to the New World beginning the Triangular Trade Route
  • Slaves were taken from Africa and taken to the Caribbean and Europe
  • Africans were traded for manufactured and raw materials
  • Were treated as if they were supplies, not people
  • Approximately 600 slaves were transported on each ship
