Why Elementary School Counselors?

Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners.

Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, school counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community, to create a caring climate and atmosphere.

By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success

The Mission of the J. Wallace James counseling program is to address the needs of the whole child, which includes their social, emotional, academic, spiritual, and physical development.

Thus, the J. Wallace James Elementary School Counselors shall promote leadership skills by encouraging independent thinking, cooperation, initiative and preparing students to become life-long learners to meet the global demands of the twenty-first century.

How Can You Help?

We would like your ideas on how we can meet the following needs:

  • We have noticed that boys are more likely at JWJ to receive a discipline referral even though we have more girls than boys.
  • 48.6% of our population are males
  • 51.3% of our population are females
  • Females-82 referrals (40 females)
  • Males-330 referrals (95 females)
  • Unexcused tardies and early check-outs are affecting our attendance rate in a negative way.
  • 487 unexcused check outs
  • 393 unexcused tardies
  • What are the issues that students struggle with in middle and high school? How can we synergize and prevent those issues and make the transition from elementary to middle smoother?

Indirect Service

The other 20% of our time is spent in indirect services to students.

  • Collaboration with parents, teachers, & administration.
  • Referrals to outside agencies
  • Data Analysis
  • Program Planning

Direct Service

Counselors today are more proactive than reactive.

As part of a comprehensive counseling program, we spend 80% of our time providing direct services to students.

We look at school-wide data (grades, standardized test scores, attendance, behavior, etc.) to find needs that we can meet through:

  • School-wide programs
  • Class lessons
  • Small groups
  • Individual planning
  • Individual Counseling
  • Parent Workshops
  • Teacher presentations

Results

Last school year, we discovered that 39.56% of the student absences were unexcused. We decided as a counseling team, we could provide school-wide interventions to improve the unexcused absence rate.

Through those interventions, we were able to reduce the unexcused absence rate to only 21.73%!
