By Maverick Newman

How did the Maroubra Force impact the Japanese?

Before being reinforced Maroubra Force, for a whole month, fought delaying Japanese action through Owen Stanley Range, finally the Maroubra Force now with their reinforcements defeated the Japanese just outside of Port Moresby. Maroubra Force was relieved by the 16th and 25th Brigades, which undertook the subsequent counter-offensive which drove the Japanese back to their beachheads at Buna, Gona and Sanananda on the Papuan north coast.

Primary Source

Purpose : To document the events of Kokoda

Origin: Parer, Damien Peter

August 1942

Veiwpoint: This source shows the unity between the New Guinea natives and the Australian troops that all made up the Maroubra Force and won Australia the war of Kokoda.

Why is their controversy about what event (Kokoda or Gallipoli) is more significant to Australian History?

There is a large debate over the notion that Kokoda should be Australia’s main significant war battle over Gallipoli. Unlike Gallipoli, Kokoda was a war that was defending our own country (not invading another) and was a success.

Under the command of Major General Basil Morris, the Maroubra Force was made up of the Papuan Infantry Battalion, the 53rd Battalion and the 39th Battalion. The Second engagement introduced the leadership of Major Cameron after the death of previous leader Major Owen, at which by this stage the Maroubra Force had grown to approximately 550 men. Leaving a reserve at Deniki, Cameron now moved with 430 men to obey his orders to retake Kokoda.
