- The terms often used are "gaze", "stare", and "gawk"
- Eye contact (oculesics) is seen as one of the most important forms of nonverbal communication

Faux Pas
- The people of China are about keeping conversation short, this includes their eyes
- In Islamic countries, eye-contact is kept to a minimum with the opposite sex
- In many Hispanic cultures, it is also rude to hold eye contact with the opposite sex for over 5 seconds
Avoiding Eye Contact
- Sadness, embarrassment, shame, etc.
- To remember an event, or to make one up
- Looking to the left, looking to the right
Eye contact gives a sense of intimacy that brings emotion to its peak.

- Eyes fall into all the forms of nonverbal communication
- Eyes give us the ability to see the use of haptics, kinesics, proxemics, and so many other forms of communication
- Eyes give us the ability to speak without saying a word, like in American Sign Language usage
