How has prosthesis changed over time?

How has prosthesis advanced?

Other types of Prosthesis

Wartime always pushes surgery beyond its limits due to the extreme nature of wars. Most prosthetics till date have taken place during wars. The American Civil War was one of the first wars to have used this technology to fit approx. 30,000 young fighters with prosthetic limbs. These limbs were made of wood and proved quite hard for the person to cope as it was heavy.

  • Facial prosthesis - nose and ear
  • Dental prosthesis - dental implants and dentures
  • Prosthesis of the neck such as larynx substitutes and trachea replacements.
  • Joint prosthesis - knee joint and torso joint

What are prosthetic limbs?

Prosthetic limbs are artificial device that replaces a missing body part - in this case arms or legs. Prosthesis in Greek means attachment or addition.

How has prosthesis advanced?

Prosthesis has been mentioned throughout history and the Egyptians were the earliest pioneers of this idea. In many traditional and historical stories and myths, prosthesis has been referred to as replacing a body part lost through trauma or disease replaced with wooden or metal body parts.

During WW2 (1939-45) technology had advanced and prosthesis began to use material such a plastic and aluminum so that the prosthesis could be lighter. This meant that they were more comfortable and easier to use. Following the Vietnam War these prosthesis was now being introduced to electronics and started to prove more functional.

They earliest examples of prosthesis is the foot in this picture. It was found in Egypt.
