Biographical Data:

Residence

John Kemp Starley worked for many years under James Starley his uncle and his partner William Hillman and then later for british cycle makers Haynes and Jefferis until 1877. In 1877 John created his bicycle business with help from his partner William Sutton at the time they were producing tricycles in an attempt to make a safer and easier to ride version of the Penny-farthing, which was his uncles design. John changed the world when in 1885 he designed and produced the Rover Safety Bicycle. This bicycle was a rear-wheel, chain-driven cycle with two wheels of similar size. The Safety bike also had a diamond shaped frame. It was also the lightest, strongest, most reasonably priced, most rigid, most compact and ergonomically sound of bikes. This was John Kemp Starley’s greatest contribution to the bicycle.

1872 - John moved to Coventry to work with his uncle James Starley

1881 - John lived at Gloucester Street, Coventry with his wife and 4 children

1891 - John lived at Barr's Hill House, Radford Road, Coventry with his wife and 6 children

John K. Starley worked under his uncle manufacturing bikes for quite some time and then later was in charge of the mechanics of the manufacturing of bikes at another bicycle firm. So he was always around bicycles and their development. He saw first hand the safety issues involved in the velocipedes and how difficult it was to learn to ride them. So when he created his own company he began to develop tricycles to solve the safety and learning curve issues. His main purpose was to place the rider at proper distance to the ground, relocate the seat in relation to the pedals and to move the handlebar to such a position that the rider could get the most force upon the pedals with little fatigue. He solved all of his design principles with the invention of the Rover Safety Bicycle.

This website provided me with background information on John and his uncle james as well as some of the motivation behind his works and inventions.

The Bicycle is an important invention of the 20th century due to its affects on our modern Amenities.

The Rover Bicycle Company was what J.K.Starley and Co. became a few years later. This company later purchased a car manufacturing plant. That was then bought by what is now BMW, tying the car industry back to the bicycle industry in more than just the technology BMW developed from Rover Bicycles. John K. Starley also created chain-drive which was later put into car technology and later belt driven technology, showing his relevance to things other than the bicycle.
