The "Early Modern" Period in Europe can also be called "The Renaissance," or rebirth.

The Ottoman Empire grew into a large, powerful Empire, controlling a massive region from Africa to Asia.

Europe could not defeat them, so if they wanted to trade in India or China, they had to pay the Ottomans a heavy tax. The tax was used to strengthen the Empire's military.

Europe was terrified of the Janissary Corps, the first whole gunpowder unit in history.

These soldiers were taken from their Slavic Christian parents and raised in a military academy. Raised to be loyal only to the Sultan, they were a dangerous threat to the backward armies of Europe.

But what was life like for the average person?

In this period, very few people were literate, but we can take clues from the written works we can examine.

Soon, Spanish treasure fleets, laden with plundered gold from the New World was funding Europe's Renaissance.

We just saw a CAUSE and EFFECT in Early Modern History. In your own words, summarize this cause and effect.

But they underestimated how large the world was. And they found the New World instead.

With no access to the markets of India and China, some looked for another way. Knowing the world was round, they figured they could CIRCUMNAVIGATE the globe.
