General Information
Studies
- Environmental Context
- Physical State
- Emotional State
- Senaory Modality
What we Know
Emotional State
Environmental Context
Subjects who are sad are better able to remember unhappy or unpleasant memories; subjects who are happy are better able to remember happy or pleasant memories.
Subjects remember information better if they are in the same room, time of day, ect. as when they learned it.
Sensory Modality
Physical State
New material is most likely to be recalled when the person is in the same mental, emotional, or biological state as when the material was learned.
Context reinstatement
and Encoding Specificity
Subjects may be able to answer questions more readily in the format in which the information was presented in.
If new information is learned while under the influence of a drug, such as caffeine or nicotine, recall will improve if tested under the influence of the same drug.
