Introduction of the city

Population and area city.

Thousands of years before Europeans arrived, a large portion of south east Florida, including Miami, was inhabited by Tequestas.

This area was inhabited for thousands of years by Indian tribes. When a Spanish sailor arrived, it was occupied by several tribes between which were the "Miami Indians" who gave the name to the Miami river and then to the city.

In 1566, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was sent by the Spanish monarchy to remove the French from Florida who had already established several colonies.
