Deliver us from evil

For this seventh and last Petition we acknowledge the reality of the devil and we place our trust in Christ, his definite victory over evil on the cross, to save us from what is dark in our lives and preserve us from evil and sin.We are praying to and put our trust in God for shelter and protection from the evil that surrounds us and the evil one, the angel personally opposed to God and to his plan of salvation, Satan that tempts us.

Amen

The Seven Petitions of the Our Father

Thy will be done as it is in Heaven

Lead us not into temptation

Thy Kingdom come

Forgive us or trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us

"Hallowed be thy name"

Give us this day our daily

For this first Petition it is saying how we pray that God's name would remain "hallowed", in other words sanctified, blessed, glorified, shined upon, and Holy; only used with reverence and honor and not be taken in vain or blasphemed. Objectively speaking, God's name is already holy, but this petition is asking that God makes his name holy to all people through his works and deeds; by asking "hallowed be thy name" we enter into God's plan of loving kindness for the fullness of time, "according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ", that we may be "holy and blameless before him in love".

For this second Petition, it explains/represents how we, in our Catholic community, apart of the Catholic Church, look and wait for Christ's glorious return at the end of time and the final coming of the Reign of God in glory when Christ hands it over to is father. When he does, God's Kingdom will meet us here on earth, where it will be welcomed, his Church and his word, in the "today in our every day lives".

For this third petition, we are saying how we are faithful to God and will follow his plan for us. We ask our Father to unite, submit and confirm our will to that of his Son, so as to fulfill his plan of salvation in the life of the world. God has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ- to gather up all things in him, things in Heaven and things on earth; we ask insistently for this loving plan to be fully realized, just as the Angels and Saints cheerfully seek and do God's will in heaven so too will we here on earth.

For this fifth Petition, it explains how everyone falls short of the Glory of God (sins) and that we are asking for forgiveness of when we have. We beg God's mercy for our offenses and for the times that we have fallen short of loving God and loving our neighbor, mercy which can penetrate our hearts to the extent that we are able to forgive our enemies.

For this fourth Petition,we ask and trust that God may provide all that we need, not just physical, but spiritual as well. By saying "give us" we express in communion our filial trust in our Heavenly Father. When we say "Our daily bread" we refer to the earthly nourishment necessary to everyone to physically sustain us throughout the day, and also to the Bread of Life: the Word of God and the Body of Christ, that spiritually nourishes us (the Eucharist).

This sixth Petition implores the Spirit of discernment and strength; it requests the grace of vigilance and determination. We are asking God to watch over us, remove us from temptation, away from the dangers of sin, to give us the graces we need to fight these temptations and to not allow us to take the path that leads us to sin.

The original Our Father

Our Father

who art in Heaven,

hallowed be Thy name;

Thy Kingdom come,

Thy will be done

on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil,

Amen

The Seven Petitions of the Our Father

Modern day language Our Father

Our Father

who is in Heaven,

may your name always remain Holy;

let your kingdom come,

let your will be done

on earth, the same as is in Heaven

provide us with the food we need today;

and forgive us, our wrongs and sins

as we forgive those who have wronged us;

Keep us clear of temptation

and save us from evil,

Amen
