Activity: Mind Map - What is Higher Order Thinking?

Higher Order thinking

1. Do not speak once the presentation has begun.

2. Focus your eyes to the front of the room at all times. Do not look at your peers around you.

3. Silence in all activities.

4. Activities will be individual only, hence silence within them.

5. Do not ask questions.

6. The presenter will direct and facilitate all learning.

Authentic Assessment

The Year 5 classroom consists of 30 students, from a range of diverse backgrounds and capabilities. There is a child in the class that is new to the country, and who's literacy skills (including oral literacies) is poor. There is also a group of students who struggle in public speaking and who therefore, become disengaged quickly when they know speaking in front of others is a requirement. Lastly, a child with severe autism is in the class, he requires one on one support, struggles in team work situations and communication skills.

Authentic assessment is the measurement of 'intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful" as contrasted to multiple choice standardised tests. Authentic assessment can be devised by the teacher, or in collaboration with the student by engaging student voice.

Negotiated Curriculum

Assessment Rubric

You are to work in your table groups, you are to assign one person in the group to be a teacher and the rest to be students. You will be given an example of a bad assignment sheet that has been created with no negotiation. You are to act as teachers and students and negotiate the assignment to reflect middle schooling principles. Nominate a person to share back to the class.

  • Negotiating elements of schooling is a key feature claimed by middle schooling
  • Students learning is more effective and rewarding if they have a voice in and ownership of schooling, curriculum and the teaching and learning process.
