LUTHER'S GOALS

Ethos

His Goal: To appear innocent and with no fault before the Diet of Worms (General Assembly)

His Ultimate Purpose: Correct the doctrines and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

"Is it not manifest that the laws and human doctrines of the popes entangle, vex, and distress the consciences of the faithful, while the crying and endless extortions of Rome engulf the property and wealth of Christendom, and more particularly of this illustrious nation?"

-The Protestant Reformation began in 1517 and speech was given on April 18th, 1520

-Sparked by Martin Luther

-Wrote '95 Thesis' and posted it on the church door for all to see

-Wrote books on Christianity and against the Roman Catholic Church's doctrines and teachings

-Luther was excommunicated from Germany after his speech was made in Worms, but still continued fighting against the church.

Translation: The church is corrupt, causing the nation distress and vexation

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

- Effective in the sense that he is confident and truthful in everything he says

- Appears before the court, not arrogant or meek, but he stands before them with confidence, respect, and humility

-Admits to being too harsh in some of his writings about the Pope; eases tension

-Speech was effective, even though he was excommunicated

-Luther kick started the church reformation and then strengthened it when he publicly shared this speech

-Articulation of words and gentle, humble tone grabbed peoples attention

-Extremely effective!!

Weaknesses

- Uses no Logos; Luther explains all of his ideas and opinions in his books therefore he does not include details about why the church is corrupt
