Modern Transcendentalism in Movies!

Intuition Over Reason

Importance of Nature

In conclusion, Emerson and Thoreau's ideas live on even in modern children's movies which will eventually help them shape their values and gain wisdom as they grow up.

"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit."

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events."

Explanation:

"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit."

  • Our attitude reflects the way we see nature. (if we are optimistic, we see the beauty of nature and if were pessimistic, we are blind to its beauty).
  • In Pocahontas song "Color of the Wind" she explains to John Smith that he must not ravish the lands for it is more than a possession to claim.
  • Pocahontas changes his attitude/outlook and opens his eyes making him realize that nature is more than it seems.

- Emerson, Essay 11

- Emerson, from "Nature"

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events."

Explanation:

  • Have confidence in yourself because God (divine providence) granted you the power to seek the truth
  • Chicken Little exclaimed that the "sky was falling" (intuition) but no one believed him because he was tiny and seemed crazy because it would be "impossible" for the sky to be falling (reason)
  • Although he couldn't quite have a scientific evidence, he was positive on what he saw and felt when a piece of the sky hit him. In the end, he gained confidence in himself and saved the town from an alien invasion.

Simplified Life

"Our life is frittered away by detail... simplify, simplify."

Nonconformity

Explanation:

"Our life is frittered away by detail... simplify, simplify."

  • Means that: you have to live life in the moment, not worry about what tomorrow will bring, and not to over think but live life simple ^-^
  • "Hakuna Matata" is an optimistic song from Lion King which "means no worries for the rest of your days" and promotes "a problem free philosophy."
  • Both have a thematic message of disregarding unnecessary details we tend to fret over and to not worry, but be happy!

Emerson and Thoreau

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

- Emerson, Journal 1885

2007

Explanation:

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

  • With society telling everyone to change, it is important to just stay true to yourself.
  • In the movie Ratatouille, Remy, who wanted to be more than a standard ally rat that ate out of garbage cans and lived in sewers, discovers that he is not fit for that type of life and prospers to become an excellent chef.
  • However due to his family who wanted him to live forever as a filthy rat, Remy stayed true to himself and pursued his dreams.

Self-Reliance

Explanation:

"I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude."

  • The best companion is solitude (situation of being alone) *although it sounds negative, its basically saying that definite person you can rely on is yourself
  • Kevin was "home alone" and needed to beat the bad guys so rather than calling the police, he handled it himself by making traps of his own
  • Self-reliance = reliance on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others

"I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude."
